Donkeyman? Merchant Navy
« on: Sunday 18 January 09 14:21 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone tell me what a donkey man did in the merchant navy?   All other records have stated that the person I am looking at was a 'marine fireman' or 'stoker'.

He would in charge of a donkey-engine, a small steam-engine, usually for subsidiary operations on board ship, as feeding the boilers of the propelling engines.

Hi all,

I have just received my Grandads marrage certificate and it states his Dads job as a shore donkeyman so was just about to post on here if any one had any idea julieann1 beat me to it.

My G.Granddads job title says shore donkey man so i presume he was on a ship that does not leave port. I know that sounds silly but what else can it be. I know from earlier certificates he has been a ships fireman early 1900s and a dock labourer late 1800s

Hi Dennis
Was he in the merchant or royal navy? You may be able to track down which ships or shore bases he was on, which may give you an ida of what he was doing
