Alice Johnston
« on: Sunday 18 January 09 14:47 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for the birth of my g.grandmother Alice Johnston and  the 1911 census says she was born in Newry about 1847.  On one census she is named Eleanor and on all others Alice.  She married Andrew Miller b.Ireland 1844.

Civil registration of births didn't start until 1864 so there will be no birth certificate but her marriage certificate should list her father's name and occupation.

Unfortunately I have no marriage for Andrew and Alice.  All I know for certain is that she died in Preston Lancs in 1923

Where was she in 1911 (Irish 1911 census asks married women how many years married which is usually a great help)?

I have just looked at the 1911 census and it just shows that Alice was widowed, living with one daughter and there is no mention of previous children, although I know there were at least 3 children.  Alice was widowed in 1872 in Preston.
Many thanks for your help

Could Alice/Eleanor have married Andrew Miller in England? can't see anything that matches up in Ireland for Andrew Miller/Millar to an Alice or Eleanor but might be worth checking England for the marriage. If she was in Preston in 1872 when husband died have you found her in earlier English census records (might  also be an indication as to where marriage took place).

I could well have found them in Liverpool m. 1865, by the way Andrew's death took place in L'pool not Preston which is where Alice moved to.  Believe it or not I spend my time telling people to use alternative surname spellings and forgot to use Millar.
Many, many thanks, at least I should now be able to find the fathers of the above.

I searched under Millar as it is more common here than Miller. Hopefully you'll be able to track down some more information.
