The 1891 show the family still in Sunderland but Elizabeth must have died and John is married to a Mary Ellen (?Todd). James Wallace is still with them so it is the same family as the 1871.

John is now down as born , Dundee.

Hi Gadget,

Thanks for the reply.

Another member of the Mcgeorge clan have been trying to track John. He remarried later in life to Mary Ellen and on this marriage certificate his father was included as David, a solicitor. I can’t find any record of him though. It also states john was born in Dundee which contradicts the information on his first marriage certificate which says Midlothian. It’s a real mystery !

I’ve seen the Mcgeorge family from Byker, they don’t tie up with the family in Sunderland unfortunately.

The belief is that our John came down from Dumfries/Galloway however finding the right birth details seems impossible!

And thanks Skoosh too!

Another mystery of this family is that John’s son, George William introduced a tradition of adding Roseberry as a middle name to his son Ernest. This tradition then carried on until it got to me and my parents didn’t carry it on. I’ve found another John McGeorge who married a Mary Roseberry in the Durham area. Seems to much of a coincidence not to be related somehow?!?

Skoosh.

I'll have to get mine down.

So we have him born Dundee, D & G and Liberton. I'll check D & G records for David McGeorge.

Do you have the 1856 marriage cert, Tom:

I think this is their marriage reg~

John McGeorge and Elizabeth Hill are on the same page :
Dec q, 1856, Sunderland, vol 10a page 483

If you get this cert, their fathers' names and occupations will be on it and you can work backwards from there.

I've had a look on Durham Record online but nothing so far.

Just adding this as interesting ~

There is a baptism of a Mary McGeorge in Castle Douglas in 1834, the 'illegitimate daughter of David McGeorge'. Mother was Agnes Weir.
