Looks like there was a son James as well born 1860 in Rye.

He is in St Lawrence in 1901, with wife Margaret and brother Arthur aged 24 born Deal. He is with Benjamin and Elizabeth at Rye in 1861 aged 1, 1881 at sea. Can't see him in 1891, or Arthur.

Many thanks Ian - very much appreciated.

Amos is my line and I have him in city directories in later years living in Winstanley Crescent - perhaps it was the family home.

Hi,

This looks like the service record for James, which might help place him in 1891,

http://www.rootschat.com/links/05f1/

In 1871 there is also a Benj J age 9, born Rye Sussex, whivch looks like,

Benjamin Josiah Bootes    JAS Q 1861    Rye    2b  5

Maybe his service record, although the DOB is a year out :-\

http://www.rootschat.com/links/05f2/

In 1881 he is here,  RG11/5639  f.61  p.6  an ordinary seaman aboard Hms Encounter, the enumeration page for her says she was in Hong Kong, China.

It looks like he came home and got married,

Benjamin Josiah BOOTS    OND Q 1889     St Saviour Southwark    1d  22
Ruth Ann CARVER with same details.

It looks like Charles has got married,

Charles Edward BOOTES    AMJ Q 1890     St Saviour Southwark    1d  47
Maria PERRY with same details.

In 1891 he is here,  RG12/652  f.155  age 28, married, seaman from Rye Sussex, aboard the Eastward, a fishing boat off Gravesend. I think the enumeration page for her shows her home port is Hull but she's going to Billingsgate.

Oooh, I think I've found some more of the family (including James from above) living here with Maria, transcribed at Anc... as BOOKS  :) It looks like Charles has been recorded twice, but if you think of Maria answering the questions while her husband is away fishing I think it looks too much like 'your' BOOTES family to be anyone else ;D

Amos has also married,

Amos BOOTES    OND Q 1887    Thanet    2a  1707
Eliza CHEESEMAN
Elizabeth Ann DENNIS
Edward Davis PINCHIN with same details.

I think he married Eliza CHEESEMAN as in 1901 I can see a widowed Elizabeth PINCHIN with her mother Elizabeth DENNIS.

Amos A             Son            2                                       "    Ramsgate

I think the Hannah you mention who is on the 1881 census, is the Caroline A from 1871, and the Caroline I have found in 1891 and 1901 with her brother Charles and family.

Birth
Caroline Hannah BOOTES   JFM Q 1870    Eastry    2a  895

Hi there,

I think I am a direct decendent of Amos Bootes. I have the same surname and his name has appeared in my own searches. He was never spoken about by my grand father (Ernest Frederick Bootes) at all according to my father Allan Leslie Bootes as he left the family home while my grand father was quite young.

My family is based in Ramsgate still and can try and answer any questions you may have.
