William BALLARD b Crickhowell??
« on: Friday 30 January 09 01:30 GMT (UK) »
Wondering if anyone can tell me if/where any parish registers might be for Crickhowell from 1810-1820?  I see the LDS have some non-conformist registers for this time but I think the person I am looking for would have been baptised in the parish church.

I am seeking birth records for William BALLARD b 1814 - 1820 (depending on which census/death cert you read).  On all censuses from 1851-81 (he died in 1888) his birthplace is listed as Crickhowell.  His marriage certificate lists his father as James BALLARD, miller.  There is a James Ballard, miller at Longtown/Clodock (Herefordshire, but only just across the border) who has a son William whose baptism date fits my William.  That James BALLARD appears to have married and had children in Cwmyoy as well as Longtown/Clodock.  I suppose my William could have been born in Crickhowell and be in Clodock/Longtown for baptism - seems a bit of a long-shot though.

My William BALLARD was married at LLanfihangel Pont-y-moyle in 1838 and by 1841 was living in Blaina, moving to Cardiff by 1881.

Any ideas gratefully received,
Judith, Canberra, Australia

Thanks, Fisherman; will have a look there.

That is a mighty fish your little friend is holding!  Is it a trout?

Hi Judith,

A friend is going to Powys archives in the next couple of weeks so I've added William Ballard to the list of look ups he's going to do for me.

Yes that is a trout my grandson is holding.

Oh fisherman, that is very kind of your friend.  I'll see if I can get any closer with the date.

Where did your grandson catch such a handsome specimen?

Hi Fisherman

I have had another look at the census/freebmd entries and have narrowed it down as follows.

Death registered Jan qr 1888, aged 71 gives birth date of 1816 or 1817
Censuses;
1841 just says he is 20 but, from my understanding the ages in 1841 were rounded down so he could be aged 20 to 24, thus birth 1817 - 1821
1851 b Crickhowell, transcribed as aged 36 but the copy is very marked, difficult to read and poorly transcribed; I think it says aged 34 thus birth dates abt 1815-1817
1861 I cannot find him or his family at all
1871 b Crickhowell, aged 54, thus born abt 1817
1881 b Crickhowell, aged 65, thus born abt 1816

The certifcate for second marriage in 1851 just says 'of full age', father's name James BALLARD, miller.
I am waiting for the cert for his first marriage in 1838 which may have more info.

I would be really grateful for any info.

Cheers, Judith (hope you are not too cold - here it will be 40C on Saturday - much too hot for humans!)

Hello again Fisherman

I notice you have an Australian connection so please ask if I can do any look-ups for you.  As I live in Canberra I use the Australian National Library reasonably frequently with access to some excellent resources.  Cheers, J

Hi Judith,

My friend has put off his trip to Llandrindod until the weather improves.
More snow on it's way  ::)

Hi Judith,

My friend finally made it to Llandrindod yesterday.

Unfortunately there is no record of a William Ballard born in Crickhowell 1814 - 1820.
So it looks as if he is the one from across the border in Herefordshire.

Regards
Chris
