Help reading an occupation
« on: Tuesday 03 February 09 01:58 GMT (UK) »

1871 Isle of Man Census - Vessels

RG10/ Piece 5771/ Folio 209/ Page 18

The last man listed on the vessel Catherine is a John Callister age 24....he seems to have a different occupation than the rest on the ship.

The copy is very bad but I wonder if someone can take a look and let me know what they think.

Thank you  ;D

Hi Mab  :)

You get the good ones, don't you!  ;D  ;)

I've clipped that bit of the page and adjusted the levels as much as possible - unfortunately the middle bit of the word is completely missing.
It resembles the word "Joiner" written further up the page, but not enough to make me convinced it's the same... :-\  Then I thought it might be "Sailor" but all the other men on the boat are "Mariners", would there be a difference?

I don't know what it is, sorry  :-\

Thanks both of you  ;D....my lot are not easy to find I'm afraid....I was hoping it was Tailor because the  John Callister I was looking for was a tailor. And, you say to yourselves why would a tailor be on a boat...I don't know.....it's the Isle of Man....maybe everyone pitched in during the fishing season. Their home port during the peak season was in Ireland...a little adventure for a 24 year old maybe...hitching a ride  ???

mab  :-\...wishfully thinking that I may have actually found one  :'(

"Jailer" was one of the things I thought of too...

mab, if you look on the page and compare other capital Ts to the first letter of your man's occupation, you might get a match and Tailor might be what it is.

Thanks Prue...I think it's tailor. A tailor can fix sails just as well as sew clothes. My mum was a tailor and she could sew everything and anything...no problem.

The Isle of Man is very hard place to research.... :P :-X :-\

For what it's worth, my initial thought was tailor.
