Possibly John was a Tailor by trade but was moonlighting as a sailor at the time of the census? Perhaps they had been short of crew?

Hi Mab,

I'm coming in late to this but again, for what its worth when I looked at Prue's copy without reading any one else's posts, therefore I was uninfluenced - I thought 'Tailor'.
