Lynne,

St Johns was built  as a Chapel of Ease to St Andrews (which being high up on Grey Mare Hill was - and still is - fairly inaccessible, and was also getting into a poor state of repair)
It was built, I believe in 1835, but when exactly it started to be used for marriages and burials I really don't know. I shall try to do some digging and find out.

St Andrews is situated on a windswept hill, with superb views over all the surrounding countryside, particularly across the Tyne Valley to the north.

Hi Jennifer

Thanks for the links.

The first link indicates the church collapsed in 1835 from mining subsidence so probably would not have been used after that until it was remodelled in 1892. Joseph BELL was a miner ... ::) (where's that whistling smiley?)

So, it would be more likely that the COULSON's were married and christened at St John's?

However, burials could have continued [outside] at St Andrew's! When were your Great Great Great Grandparents buried?

Hi Jennifer and anyone else who might be interested!

Have been googling and found this article that suggests that St John's was being used from 1835:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snods_Edge

There was also mention here by John HODGSON in his History of Northumberland that St John's was not consecrated until 1837:

http://www.archive.org/stream/historyofnorthum06nort/historyofnorthum06nort_djvu.txt

Either way, it looks like my 3x Great Grandparents Edward COULSON and Mary Ann BELL would have been married at St John's in 1840 but that Mary Ann's brother George BELL was definitely buried at St Andrew's in 1828!  :P

If anyone has any comments to the contrary please let me know! Thank you.  :D

Kind regards and God bless you,
Lynne x

To user pb3: that is wonderful you photographed and transcribed all the headstones at St. John's Church Shotley. Did you also do St. Andrews Shotley?  Do you have the transcriptions somewhere online? Such as findagrave.com?  Also, have you been in communication with Chris Nicholds? She is a caretaker for St. Andrews Shotley and is trying to get a better inventory of the stones there, including some that she found underground.  My Dixon ancestors were buried at St. Andrews, perhaps a few at St. John's. My 6th great grandfather Wm. Dixon (1720-1769) has a tombstone to the left of the front door of St. Andrews.
