GERMANY - Hoffellt/Hoffelt/Hoffield/Hoffeld ?????
« on: Tuesday 03 February 09 15:48 GMT (UK) »
Hi Everyone,

I am trying to find information about my Great Great Grand Mother - Anne Maria Hoffield / Hoffeld.

The only information I have been able to find so is :

She married Philip Young (Jung) on the 10th May 1865, in Grahams Town, South Africa.  (He was in the 96th Regiment of the British Army, and was stationed in South Africa between 1863 and 1865).

He landed in India on 01/01/1866, and transferred to 40th of Foot Regiment on 01/09/1873, where he was stationed until 1883.  When he then returned to England and was discharged on 13/02/1883.

In the 1891 census (RG12/4401/48C/71), the family was living in Cardiff, Wales and Mary was listed as being born in 1846 in Vulernaison, Germany.

BUT

Vulernaison does not exist, I have been advised that this could be Vulcmarsen (VOLKMARSEN).

-      So was she actually German and living in South Africa or was she South African?

-      I would also like to know how I would go about getting a marriage certificate.

Any information would be gratefully received.

Hi Mandy,

I have been trying for a while to find the family in the 1891 Census via FindMyPast - I have changed my subs. this year from Ancestry - I am not having much luck with other searches either.

Were they under Hoffield or Hoffeld in1891 - I have tried both names -
no luck :(

Cannot help at the moment - but will keep an eye out

Hi Viv

Sorry, in the 1891 census my Anne Marie Hoffeld was already married to Philip Young, and I do not know who her parents were.

Hallo Mandy,

I'm back  again - have found the family, I would say she was German, unless there is such a place in South Africa....

Will look around and see what I can find.

Hi Mandy,

I expect you probably have the following from the IGI, but I though I would include it just in case:

Philip Jung, 12 Jan 1836, in Rhothelsberg, Pfalz, Bayern

Parents: Johannes Jung
              Maria Elizabetha Mohr

I also found the following, probably no help at all but..

Marie Hoffeld, 20.5.1848 in Freudenburg, Rheinland

Parents:  Nicolai Hoffeld
                Anna Heusel

Might be something to go on although the " Anne " is missing in the name  but... the mother's names is Anna so that might give us a clue.

Hi Viv,

Thank you for taking the time to look for me.

I have found a lot of information about Philip Jung/Young, I have been The National Archives in London, and was lucky to find his army service record, and have made contact with a very cousin in Germany.

I found the name Anne Marie Hoffield and the marriage date, on the Army service records of Philip, but on the census and birth certificate of their children she is just listed as Mary.

The women always seem to get overlooked and I wanted to find a bit more Anne Marie.

Hi Mandy,

thought that might be a bit of useless information  :D

I have looked at the German A******y site but could not find any record of Anne Marie Hoffeld  :(, and also tried other German sites.  Pity we cannot really work out where exactly she is from.  Do you have her in the 1901 Census?

Hi Viv

Yes, i have found them in the 1901 census, RG13/4988/173/15, but their place of birth is only listed as Germany.
