Hi Penholder, I too have a relative from Heligoland born 1867.  I just spotted your message while browsing before I try to find an address in Heligoland to trace a birth!  I havent been able to trace my Gt Grandad other than 1901 and 1911 though he was in Liverpool in 1892.  My intention is to write to whoever may help and see what happens, no use to you of course but I've been trying to search this gentleman for years....  Good Luck, Johnnie

Nice to hear from you.    I'd be really interested to know who you are going to write to - and also what success you have.

The lady I'm trying to find out more about is an ancestor of a friend who doesn't have access to the internet.   She was born in Heligoland c 1816 and in the Census returns is a British Subject.

Hi Penholder, I have just emailed info@kirche-heliogland.de with some details, will wait with baited breath for a reply!  Will let you know how I get on.  My Ancestor came to UK apparently  to escape for the forthcoming troubles and that's all I know of him.  I'm not hot on history regarding ownership of land so if you can share anything - feel free!  I feel my Gt Grandad has changed his name, but we shall see - will be in touch - Johnnie

I'm afraid my knowledge of history is pretty poor but when I googled Heligoland to find out more I read that it belonged to Britain for a while.

I emailed Kruess@museum-helgoland.de - I was informed that all the records for the island were destroyed during WW2 - the person who responded to my request was from the Genealogy Dept, Erich-Nummel Kruss.
