Irish Ancestries have now made available their own Irish Place Names database. With nearly 64,000 records, it is now easier to find the places that you are searching for. Filtering of records has been made much easier and can be done by civil parish, barony, county or province. This database has been compiled and refined in the last two years. Please visit its website, http://www.Irish-Place-Names.com to find out more.

Unfortunately that link doesn't seem to work. Is this your website?

Doh, missed out on the .com at the end. Yes we have been using this database for ourselves but have decided to put it out on the WWW. We think the searching and filtering is better than most, and maybe people will like it. And the proper link is - http://www.Irish-Place-Names.com

Strangely enough there seem to be a few errors, including calling County Londonderry just Derry.

what's the source of the data in this system ?

it looks like it's been copied from John Broderick's original transcribed data on the townland database

Strangely enough there seem to be a few errors, including calling County Londonderry just Derry.

The Derry issue came about when there was pressure on space in the original database, and as we were only using it ourselves internally, it was something we chose to do. But as we have now moved to a larger database, that will be fixed in the next 24 hours. County Londonderry will appear as it is officially known.

Yes we know that there are some transcription errors, but we have eliminated as many as we have found so far. If there is an error in the mis-spelling of a village, town, or an entry is missing, please let us know. We will refer back to the original Townland Index publication and make any necessary corrections.

But have you taken the information from SeanRuad and republished it as your own database?

No it is not the same database. They both originated from the original Townlands Index publication, hence the similarity. When we transcribed it to create our database, we set out to include as much of the information that was included in the original publication, as well as extra details. Our database properly records the acreage for each entry and the type of entry, whether it was a town, townland or island.

There is extra information in the database which does not yet appear website but will do so over the next few months if all goes well.
