Edward Boullen - 1838 - Gretna
« on: Sunday 08 February 09 09:37 GMT (UK) »
I'm looking for any information on Edward Boullen, born about 1838 in Gretna, parents were John Boullen a joiner and ??possibly a mother with the surname Irving. A Boullen/Irving marriage  and/or a burial for his father John, who may have died about the same time (he would have been about 26 or 27) would also be very interesting.

I've had a look on Scotland's People, without success, but as I've not previously done any research in Scotland, I wonder if I'm missing something.  Can anyone help?

Hi  :)

I've done a few obvious searches on SP and the IGI but so far haven't found anything. I can't find any Boullens or close alternatives on the 1841 in Dumfriesshire or, after a quick search, Scotland generally.

I'm assuming that you have the info about his father from a marriage cert. and other info. from this entry in the 1851:

Dykenock, Westlinton, Cumberland
HO107/2428 F 308 Page 7

"Mary Irving, hd, unm, 63, farmer of 5 acres emp no labs, b. Cumberland Arthurst (?)
John Irving, son, unm,35,  carpenter (master - employing 1 man), b. Cumberland, Kirkington
Edward Boullen, orphan, 13, errand boy, b. Scotland, Gretna

This could imply that he was working for the family or that he was related in some way. it's difficult to tell. I see that John Irving is a carpenter. Have you followed up  the Irvings?

I checked for Boullens in Cumberland on the 1841 and found a possible lead:

Ann's Hill, Etterby, Stanwix, Cumberland
HO107/170 Bk 3 F 3 Page 17

Charles Graham, 65, Ind,
Ann Graham, 65, b. ? London
Mary Graham, 20,
Mary Campbell, 25, FS
Ellen Boullen, 20, FS, b. ? London
Thomas Athigson (?), 25, MS

all others b. Cumberland.

The  ? before London is that both look like London in the County col. but I've not seen it written in like this before.

Ellen seems to be the only Boullen in Cumberland  on the 1841. It's worth following her up.

So -  possible scenarios ~

Edward was orphaned and was employed by the Irvings - no relationship to them
Edward was a child of a relative of the Irvings
Edward was a child of John Irving (carpenter/joiner) and the mother's surname was Boullen
any others ?

I'll do a bit more searching around later today.

Hopefully some other members might join in the search  :)

Regards

Thank you, yes info is from marriage cert and from 1851 census.  Ellen Boullen is Eleanor Boullen, born 1814 in London, the rest of her family is under BULLEN at Botchergate, Carlisle.  We have considered all your 3 scenarios and are trying to eliminate some.

Eleanor also seems to have had an illeg child in 1838 baptised as Thomas in Carlisle.  Is it the same boy?  There's no subsequent trace of Thomas but Eleanor goes on to marry and have 3 daughters but never reclaims this boy.

Hello again, keyboard seized in middle of post!

The Boullen family in Carlisle (ages all to pot in 1841 census) had a first child John in 1811 and their last child, also  John was born in 1837-ish, which suggested the first John may have died, and would tie in with Edward being an orphan on 1861 Census.

As you note, there is only one Boullen family in Cumberland at the time, so I'm sure Edward Boullen is somehow related - the question is how!

Thanks for confirming the lack of Scottish details, though.  At least I didn't miss anything obvious.

Also, I note your list of alternative spellings - believe me, I've found them all and more besides!!

Hi

I've been looking at that faimily - quite a few!

1841  Ref for anyone else looking:

HO107/175 Bk 8 F 9 P 13

Interestingly, there are no Thomases or Edwards - are these family names previously at all?

I'll see if I can find something on the Irving family.

Also on the 1861 Carlisle
RG9/3915 F 36 P 12

Charles Boullen, 30, warper - cotton,  b. Scotland
Charlotte, 26, dressmaker , b. Scotland

IOn the 1871, this Charles is down as b. Carlisle, aged 40,   son in law to a Thomas Forster m. to a Catherine , aged 41, also b. Carlisle

Is he related in any way?

Yes, he's the 7th child, born 1829-ish in Carlisle (not Scotland), married to Charlotte Anderson firstly, then to Catherine Forster after Charlotte's death.

As far as I know there were no other Edwards in the family, but there was another Thomas, born in 1865 to William (4th child), brother of Charles above and Eleanor mentioned previously .

Irvings are more tricky - lots of Irvings in the area.  Interestingly, a John Irving (presumably the same one) was a witness at Eleanor's wedding in Newcastle in 1844.  We had considered whether Edward was John's son and Eleanor his mother, but I think it would be unlikely that John would then be a witness at that wedding and that Eleanor would not have her boy back.

Look forward to any discoveries on the Irvings, Gadget, and thanks for your interest.

Very very interesting if it was the same one. Who was the other witness and,  to save me a bit of time, who did she marry?

PS - and what was Ellen/Elleanor's mother's maiden surname?

PPS - It's OK now - I've found the info on a previopus postin g of yours:

Eleanor's mother was Eleanor Hastings, she and John/Jean Boullen married in
Stepney in 1811.

Their daughter Eleanor married  in 1844 in Newcastle to George Hunter Anderson, the two witnesses were John (written Jno) Irving and Elizabeth Rickaby (I think, writing's awful).  I don't know who Elizabeth Rickaby was, can't find anyone obvious on censuses or BMD.  Not helped by the elusive George Hunter A being so elusive!

PS as well as the link you've posted (reply no 7), there's also a topic of mine on Northumberland board ref George Hunter Anderson.

This is an intriguing family, we know so much but there are also so many unanswered questions!
