Malton Workhouse Birth
« on: Wednesday 11 February 09 20:50 GMT (UK) »
Richard Wilson was born in 1842 in Malton Workhouse.
There is a baptism on the IGI for a Richard Wilson, Saint Leonard, New Malton, mother Eliza Wilson, 13 Feb 1842 and in 1851 Richard appears as a lodger, aged 9, nurse child, b Malton Workhouse, living in Swinton.

Does anyone know if records of Malton Workhouse would be available anywhere??

Thanks in advance for any help.

Julie :)

Hello Julie,

Have you seen this website?  http://users.ox.ac.uk/~peter/workhouse/

enter Malton in the searchbox top left.  There is a little bit of information about the workhouse, but apparently virtually no local records survive, any records there are, are kept at North Yorkshire County Record Office, Malpas Road, Northallerton DL7 8TB.

Like you I have a single mother, Elizabeth Johnson who gave birth in the Malton Workhouse in 1841.  I have checked all the possible repositories: Borthwick Institute in York, North Yorks County Archive in Northallerton and the Yorkshire Archaeological Society in Leeds (they hold lots of parish registers for the Ridings).
I have been to Malton where the workhouse is now the fire station and tried both the Museum and reference library there.
My only find was a photograph of it from the 1960s with the tower of the firestation attached.
The gospel man for Workhouses is Peter Higginbothom and and his book 'Workhouses of the North' has a couple of information paragraphs but no photo.
So... if a photo and extract are any good, I'd be happy to send them but it look likes the records no longer exist.

You might find it interesting to read
"Malton in the early Nineteenth Century" edited by D J Salmon
Publication no. 26 of the North Yorkshire County Record Office.
ISBN 0 906035 15 5

It is based to a large extent on a survey of the town by Coppertwaite in 1841 which he seems to have written up in 1844.
Its mostly statistics but does give names of occupiers of properties, has some nice etchings of buildings and maps of that time.

Summary of the numbers in the section on Administration of the Poor Law
(they were mostly interested in the costs)

New Malton 1835-36
33 persons relieved in the Poor House
74 Bastards
103 permanently poor families

Old Malton 1835-36
7 Bastards
16 permanently Poor Families

New Malton 1840-41
32 People relieved in the Poor House
39 bastards and destitute children
133 poor families

Old Malton 1840-41
7 persons relieved in the poor house
12 bastards
35 poor families

Unfortunately there are no records for the Malton Workhouse.  I have a similar birth and have been to all the archives in York, Malton, Northallerton with no success.  When asked all say nothing exists.
The workhouse is now part of Malton firestation!
