Parish Registers Bridgeton Glasgow
« on: Friday 13 February 09 20:33 GMT (UK) »
Hi there,

I am looking for any information of the family named Swinnerton.
The 1901 census has  George and Annie  Swinnerton nee Montieth
living at 148 Boden Street Bridgeton Glasgow.

I know they had at least nine children but don't know when
except for the last child Walter Montieth Swinnerton born 1920.

Any info would be most welcome.
Thanks
Brian.

By 1855 in Scotland the birth registration was statutory so no need to rely on OPRs.

The info on any of the docs below will be very detailed.  Exact time and dob, address, parents names, who registered birth...

I've listed all births from 1855 to 1950 in Glasgow City.
Search using swin*erton as name sometimes swinerton.  Leave forename blank.
You can view most of these online for £1 each (5 credits).
Index will cost 40p (2x20p credit)

George is still the tenant of 148 Boden Street in 1913 - 14.
The following link takes you to the valuation roll for those years.
He's paying annual rent of £7-15s (£7.75) - quite high in comparison to some other properties in the street.  Suggests a better, or more likely in view of number of kids, a larger property.

Hi Dave,

Once again you have amazed me with the information you are able to find, and I thank you once again for sending it to me.
Although I am a Swinnerton down here in the North West of England. My
Scottish ancestors are not direct.  But this family  trace back to Staffordshire
where we all originate from.

I had this week been contacted by the family of Walter Monteith Swinnerton born 1920, shown on your list. All that they know about him is that he was the youngest child of a large family in Bridgeton, and had an older sister named Annie.
Walter  unfortunately died last month, over in Canada, where he had emigrated, don't know when.

I can identify some of the early baptism's on your list through the IGI.  It is the
post 1900 which I think I need to check out. Obviously the Brigeton family are the ones in question.  But St Rollex, Possilpark and Dennistoun. Are they all close together?

The valuation roll image that you sent to me, are they also available to view on line?

Regards
Brian.

The valuation lists are only available online for 1913-14 (Oh, please correct me if I'm wrong someone!).

http://www.rootschat.com/links/05kj/

Nowhere in Glasgow is that far away now.
Then, a wee bit further.

Bridgeton and Dennistoun are next door to each other in the East End of Glasgow.  Bridgeton is a bit nearer the centre.
St Rollox (Springburn etc) is even closer to centre of Glasgow, North West of Brig'ton.
Possilpark, a bit further NW.
Not beyond the realms of possibility that the one family would live in all 4 areas.

My family moved to Brig'ton and Dennistoun in the mid 19th to late 19th century.

You could concentrate on the ones with the Monteith middle name

Hi Dave and Sancti,

That is correct as they  have carried on that Scottish tradition of naming their
children's second name, after the mothers maiden name.
Their mother was Annie Monteith.

I was also sort of looking at the other names and areas to see if they could be cousins.
Looks promising with what Dave has sent and told me.

Thanks for that valuation roll link Dave.  You have better record information than we have down here.

Thanks guys.
Brian

There werent any big houses in that street as far as I know, it was all poorer tenements and ten children could have shared a room and kitchen back then. but as you say the rent was quite high for that time...

Yes Irene,
Apparently he was at this address until his death in 1929.
Thanks
