Help!   Does the crest have to have a URL?   I have a photograph in My Pictures - can I use it, and if so how?

Jill,

If you click "Additional Options" you can upload your crest that is in "My Pictures" to RootsChat as an attachment. One you have done that, your  crest will have a RootsChat URL. To see what the URL is, right-click the image you have just attached (when viewing your own message).

Jill,

I've thrown it into the wash and tumble-dired it for a while to shrink it down for you:

You're a good 'un Trystan!  Thanks - I was sitting here wondering if I was capable of doing the washing myself!  Phew!

Not wishing to be pedantic or to spoil anybody's enjoyment, I feel that a caveat ought to be given with regard to the use of "crests". (A crest is technically the device shown above the helmet.)What most people are using are blasons or coats of arms.
Coats of arms are personal and belong to an individual or a family and you should not claim them to be your own. It is like stealing somebody's signature.
Lest I be accused of hypocricy I confess I sell arms on my site but do point out that they should not be used as "family arms"but decoration.

Have fun by all means in the use of arms but don't take them seriously. I do know that the true owners are sensitive about this subject.
