Dalrymple St. Reformatory School Stranraer
« on: Tuesday 17 February 09 19:27 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Does anyone know if inmate records exist for Dalrymple St, Reformatory School in Stranraer please? I'm looking for more information on Lewis (Louis) Avery who was an inmate there according to the 1881 Census. (This information was found for me about 10 years ago but I confess I can't find it in the census searches at ScotlandsPeople for some reason.  The information I have is:

1881 Census Stranraer (899)
Book 2 Page 11
Lewis Avery 16 - Inmate - Born England (His name is incorrectly spelled it is Louis Henry Avery)

I'm curious to know what he had done to be there and any more information that might be available.

Many thanks

Terry

Tee - Northamptonshire
Sallabanks/Lefevre - Cambridgeshire

Hi CarolW

Thanks for replying - yes that's him. I have a lot of information about him before and especially after 1881 but I'm curious to know what he'd done to end up in a reformatory in Scotland - he went to Australia shortly after and settled there.

Given his age - it does seem an awfully long way from London to Scotland as a punishment

Just found your question while wondering about the Stranraer Reformatory.  Henry Pidgeon (aged 15) and two other youths were found guilty of attempting to set fire to a ship at Hull in 1874.  They were sentenced to be "imprisoned and kept to hard labour for 6 months and afterwards five years at Stranraer Reformatory".  Some kind of school for bad boys?  Ian Pidgeon.
