British Army in India
« on: Tuesday 17 February 09 20:04 GMT (UK) »
Can anybody please help me.  I am trying to research my husband's family tree with little to no success.  His Great Grandfather, William Archibald Smith was born in Rawalpindi India in about 1890.  His father was Thomas Smith and was a Sergeant Major in the Royal Engineers. I know nothing else about either of these people except Thomas died before 1914.

Can anybody please see me in the right direction.

Many thanks

Hi Alishapig,

Welcome to RootsChat :)

SMITH is a very common name, but it might be worth a try checking out these INDIA databases to see if you can find out more:

Topic: INDIA: Resources for Ancestors in British India
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,30580.0.html

Perhaps you should repeat this topic on the Armed Forces board,
as the Rootschatters there also have lots of resources for the British Army in India

Good luck,
Bob
