Waine
« on: Wednesday 18 February 09 12:57 GMT (UK) »
Can anybody help with the search of my wife's family line; the name is Waine and they resided in Prescot Lancashire. Her Fathers name is Thomas Albert Waine jnr B: 14.1.1920 d:18/12/1992 his father was also called Thomas Waine snr born and died in Prescot not sure of dates. He married an Elsie Gertrude Waine, do not have a maiden name. They had 2 sons, Thomas jnr and Arthur. We believe Elsie may have been born in the IOM but this is unconfirmed. Would also like to know details on Thomas Waine snr's father and mother. All help would be appreciated to start our search.

Thanks,

Hello Atwell   :)

I can only see one marriage for a Thomas Waine to an Elsie, and that was in 1914  in Prescot, to Elsie Corrin.

That Elsie doesn't give a middle name, however.

I think the best place for you to start would be with Thomas Albert's birth certificate, since you have the known date for that and the birth cert. will give Elsie's maiden name   ;)

Once that is estabished and perhaps the marriage in 1914  confirmed as the correct people, that marriage certificate will give both fathers' names,  together hopefully with Thomas and Elsie's ages at the time, and it should then be easier to find them previously  ;)

Amended :  date of marriage     :-[

Hi,

FreeBMD  (http://freebmd.rootsweb.com) has this birth registration:

Thomas A Waine  MarQ 1920  Prescot  8b  1855

mother's maiden name:  Corrin

And a marriage registration:

Thomas Waine    DecQ 1914    Prescot  8b   1153

bride:  Elsie Corrin

A copy of the marriage certificate should show the name and occupation of the father, which you can use to look for the family on census records and to look for Thomas Waine's snr's birth.

Thanks for such a quick reply, this will now give me a good start. Can you suggest a website where we can search for any history on the St Helens mine site's and it's history as Thomas Waine snr was a miner in that area all his working life. Amazingly by all accounts he walked from Prescot to the St Helens Collery did a days work and walked home, about 2 hours walking each day....

Thanks,

Hi,

I can't advise on any sites but when in doubt I just "google" and see what turns up!  ;)

Happy hunting!

You are lucky if you have the name of one of the collieries where your relative worked. There would be hundreds of pits in the St Helens area, as there were in most of Lancashire.

If one colliery was paying a penny per ton more than another, our ancestors would think nothing of an extra few minutes' walk. The extra cash would more than pay for the shoe leather.

Few employment records survive, so sadly, we normally know the name of a workplace only when a fatality was involved.
Looking at ALSTON in south Ribble area, ALSTEAD and DONBAVAND/DUNBABIN etc. everywhere, HOWCROFT and MARSH in Bolton and Westhoughton, PICKERING in the Whitehaven area.
