Who did they marry?
« on: Thursday 19 February 09 22:26 GMT (UK) »
My grandfather, James R DORAN, had four sisters, all born in Carlisle. I can't find a spouse for any of them. Their names were Ann, born 1860, Ellen, born 1863, Sarah Jane, born 1880 and Margaret, born 1892.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Thanks

There are lots of Doran marriages in the  Whitehaven area in the relevant timescale, including the four names you have mentioned. Are you sure they stayed in Carlisle?

I presume you have tried searching www.freebmd.org.uk

Hi Jen,

I am not actually certain that they remained in Carlisle. I do know their  brothers did except for one. I have checked freebmd, I'm at a total loss looking for these women.

These names DO appear on freebmd. Maybe you should try looking again...

There is no way, without buying certifictaes that these are yours but have you seen the following:

Mar 1881, Whitehaven 10b/775 - Ellen Doran

Jun 1882, Whitehaven, 10b/967 - Ann Jane Doran

Jun 1899, Cockermouth, 10b/1188 - Sarah Jane Doran

Dec 1901, Carlisle, 10b/851 - Sarah Doran

These are just a few possibles for your women, there are more on FreeBMD as Pauline said.

Ellen Doran does not appear with the family (or, apparently, anywhere else) in any census, and unless you know otherwise it looks as though she may have died young:

Are you sure about a Margaret b 1892 being a sister of the others?

Sarah Doran senior is enumerated as aged:

25 in 1861 (RG9/3916/47/10)
37 in 1871 (RG10/5218/114/14)
47 in 1881 (RG11/5155/131/14)
50 [sic] in 1891 (RG12/4287/13/20)

I think it would be very surprising if she had had another child in 1892.

I can't easily see the family in 1901 - have you found them? Now found - see below.

Anna :)

Jun 1899, Cockermouth, 10b/1188 - Sarah Jane Doran

This one can be ruled out as she married Peter McCourt on the same page; the 1901 census for them shows she is several years older than the "correct" Sarah Jane, and born in Workington rather than Carlisle.

Margaret, if she was indeed a sister, would have been of marrying age at the outset of WW1. She could easily have been one of those young women who never married - there were so many of them.

Well done Anna, finding the Sarah Jane details which eliminate her from the possibles. :)
