« on: Sunday 22 February 09 14:08 GMT (UK) »
Anyone here know much about planes? My grand father is on the right and the photo is most likely to have been taken in Africa. was just wondering if anyone knows what type of plane it is?  thanks

Hi,

I think it's a Fairey Firefly, the Typhoon had a large radiator under the nose and this a/c has them in the wing roots. Also, the exhausts are higher up than mid-nose so it's either a Merlin or Griffon engine.

Michael.

P.S. Of the two a/c visible under the port wing I can only recognise the side-on one, which is an Anson.
