Thankyou...ought to have worked that out myself  :-\

???  I've just had another dumb thought..

You kindly did a lookup in the 1871 Political Directory for me a while ago.  It gives the head of household name and the number of people in the household ie 3.. does this include women and children ?  or is it just the number of people eligable to vote ?

Hi Suey

In the introduction to "Lewes in 1871 - A Household and political directory" it says:

"In the next three columns are totalled all the members of the household.
The first includes the householder and all those related to him / her, the second the number of domestics or other servants, and the third all other members, such as boarders, visitors, other employees"

Hi Chris - thanks for that..    :)

It just occurred to me that as women did'nt have the vote they may not have been included ~

Hi Chris - wonderful work on the burial records v v helpful!!  Do you/or is there access to marriage records for the parish?  I am interested in parents and or witness to the marriage of John CRIPPS and Mary RICHARDSON that took place at St John Sub Castro in Mar 1831?

Mary is a sticking point as she declared on the 1851 census in Brighton that she was born in Portugal (abt 1813).  I am hoping that her marriage may give a nugget of info to trace her family.

I will be eternally grateful for any help you can give me.  Thank you!!!

Anne-Marie :)

Hi there Anne-Marie

Thanks for the compliments on the St John Sub Castro work.

Unfortunately I have not done any work on the Marriage records of that church, that is scheduld for some time in the future.

The marriage records would be on film at the East Sussex Record Office in Lewes, plus there are transcribed coies of the marriages on the open bookshelf at the end of the record office (limited details though)

As yours has a date of about 1831, then no certificate will be available to you (began 1837) and even the filmed reigister could be of limited use as the content was not standardised till after1837, whilst burials and baptism were entered in a specialist book from 1813 onwards.

Sorry to be so negative

Hi Chris
Sorry for the delay in replying but my computer crashed.
I am very new to this and am grateful for all help and can assure you it is not negative!  I live in East Anglia so unable to get to the Lewes office - could I trouble you for whatever info is available for the marriage? I appreciate that there is no certificate and the info not standard but I am hoping for a little luck!
(27 March 1831)

Just a thought do you many Richardson's bap at St John's from 1813 to 1831.

Please advise me of the etiquette - am I asking too much?  If I am being cheeky, rude or abusing your help please do tell me.

Thanks

Hi Anne-Marie

I have printed off your request for info for the marriage uou require - next time I go to the record office, possibly next week, will look for further details for you.

Checked St John Sub Castro for baptisms for Richardsons - NILL
very unusuals that, either they did not stay in lewes or they changed churches.

There is no etiquette as far as I am concerned about the number of research requests. - Most of the information I have is either contained within my computer on a second hard drive or is in printed format near my computer, so not very difficult to access.

I am happy to share my resources with any genuine researcher.
