Stillborn child Newbridge
« on: Monday 14 February 05 20:58 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone know if i can trace my grandma's stillborn child .                      I'd like to know if he was named. she was living in Newbridge  and was married there in St Conleths Church 1918 .The child would have been born 1918-1919 . Her  name was Ellen May and married Thomas charles Mcevoy.  Any help would be appreciated.   Regards Teresa  :)

Why not write to the Priest at the Church.

Billiejo,

I suppose it is a bit late now as Teresa has probably obtained the information required but am I correct in thinking it is advisable to send the priest a small contribution when sending an enquiry? The Church is not a business so I believe they are not in a position to post out a set scale of charges. I recall reading a message along such lines on one of the boards some time ago.

All the best Christopher.

I have just realised that stillborn births were not registered.

Im a bit late here but occasionally a stillbirth would be recorded in civil death records. You could try your luck there. Worked for me in the 1920's.

It is unlikely that there would be any record in the Church records unless they have ownership of the graveyard.  checking with the burial records is more likely to give you an answer.  If the child was buried in the local graveyards Angels plot. this is possible if the child was born at home.

Best wishes in your search

Stillbirths aren't supposed to be in the death registers. There is now a separate stillbirth register (restricted access).

For Republic of Ireland- started 1995 but you can back-register a stillbirth:

For Northern Ireland- https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/articles/introduction-groni-and-its-records
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!
