Brionne,

Many thanks for the email but since my original email I have managed to find out some further information regarding:

1. For one branch of the family who we understood may have been in the Army in India and may even have died there.

These are revised to:

a) Harold WJ (?) Anstis b 1871 and Robert Anstis b 1877 - disappear after 1891 census (possibly in India?)

c) Reginald Anstis b 1887 - disappears after 1901 census

2. We now understand that the surname of Sarah (ex Anstis) and Henry or Harry was DOMING (not Dominey). So the information you found was based upon my poor information, sorry :-[! We also found that they had (at least) the following children:

a) Harry Doming b 1876 d ?

b) Willie Doming b 1879 in Kurseong India d ?

c) Charlie Lionel Doming b 1881 in Kurseong India d ?

d) Jane Doming b 1884 in ? India d in NZ ?

e) Netta Doming b? in ? d ?

3. It would be really great if someone can  find some further information on all the above as we have hit a brick wall.

4. Many thanks for your assistance to date.

Greetings

Jane Dominy - daughter of Harry was my grandmother who married Sydney Harold Peterson and who passed away in NZ in 1979 in Auckland NZ.

England & Wales BMD records show Harry Dominy and Sarah Ann Anstis married in the last quarter of 1874.

I believe I may be able to help you with some information and will organise my records should you be interested.
Regards
Warwick

Hi,

1. Great news, thanks for responding to the earlier post. It's a great site Roots! I had a response also from sharyn555, I assume that was part of the same post.

2. Sarah was an older sister to my G/GF William Anstis b 1854. In fact Sarah Ann (to give her correct title!) had an elder sister Mary Joan (died 5 yoa), 3 older brothers James Tucker b 1843, Robert b 1848 and Samuel b 1850 and a younger brother (my G/GF).

3. My tree shows your GM Jane had three children John, George & Frank (Peterson?) and that she born in India circa 1882. I also found that Jane was living with her Uncle Robert in Bath according to 1901 census. So, presumably she emigrated to NZ after 1901?

4. Sarah Ann & Harry (Henry?) Doming/Dominy went to India (between 1876 - 1878?) and had 5 sons and 3 daughters? It would be great to find out more about them and their lives.

5. I would be interested to find out more of all the family if possible and perhaps you would be kind enough to send me a personal response via Roots?

Hi
My pleasure to assist where possible - Sharyn is my sister who has a daughter in Darjeerling touring at this time.

My tree is on Genes Reunited for your info.

Interesting that you mention that Jane was in the 1901 UK Census as I was unable to find her.

As to the Dominy name  - I believe that is the correct spelling of the name is as I have set out. All the documentation has been in this name. I have a Kurseong Extract for her baptism plus a copy of the original Certificate of Marriage between her and Sidney Peterson where they were married in Bombay.

Her details are:Jane Dominy
Born at Kurseong on the 05/05/1883.
Baptised at Christ Church Kurseong on 24 /6/1883
She married Sidney Harold Peterson who had been in the British Army but discharged 1912. He was married to a Ivy Davies  at that stage but she died.
Jane married Sidney on 23 /2/1920 in Bombay and had the three boys as you have on your tree.

When in NZ they lived in Auckland until Jane passed away in 1977.

I have little information about the Dominy family or Jane's brothers and sisters as I have been unable to find away to get this info.
Hope this is a help.
Cheers
Warwick

Hi
Messed up my first entry somehow but I was so interested in your posting. My daughter is currently on holiday in Darjeeling and saw a donated item from a Geo Dominey in a museum there. In response I googled  ‘Dominey’ and ‘Darjeeling’ and got your posting! Warwick has been following up the Peterson side of our family but the Dominy/Anstis side has been a mystery. Our dad Frank died in 1996 and we were not interested in our family history until after that time I guess. Jane died when I was 24 and I visited with her often but she didn’t talk about India or England that I can remember looking back. I know that she was a governess in her adult life before marriage and travelled to Europe in the course of that work. She met our grandfather I believe on a ship. He was widowed and travelling with his children. Jane was 37 I calculate when that marriage took place so she started her family at an advanced age. She was 94 when she died. They married and had the three sons you have recorded. Our father was the youngest, Frank. The oldest  - John – was born deaf and when my father was 5 the family left India for Christchurch, NZ where there was a school for the deaf. Sidney Peterson was a NZer from Dunedin so NZ was probably a natural choice. I don’t know how long the family was in Christchurch but they must have moved to Auckland very quickly because we have school photos of my father at a young age in Auckland.as far as I know Jane didn’t travel out of NZ again once she arrived here. I don’t know anything about her parents and they didn’t visit her to my knowledge. John married and had 6 children and they live in Auckland. I saw them recently at his ex wife’s funeral. He has been dead for  3 or 4 years. George went to Australia about 45 years ago and I haven’t heard about that part of the family for many years. I know George died some years ago.
I noticed your query about Samuel Anstis. Hilda Gain ( I presume Anstis before marriage) was a regular visitor to Jane in my childhood and her daughter Daphne used to visit our parents with Hilda when Hilda was old. I was not sure where she fitted into the family until I saw your query. Daphne lives or used to ( I haven’t seen her since my father died) on the North Shore in Auckland.
Also, for many years my father wrote to Jane’s sister who lived in India and I feel sure it was in Darjeeling . She had a son who lived with her and I am not sure but I think  that he was a doctor.
I was interested to read that Jane was in Bath in 1901 as I feel quite interested in her early life.
Great to have made this contact with you
Sharyn

Hello

Harry (born Henry I think ?) Dominy, my great grandfather, married Sarah Anne Anstis in 1874 in Devon, England and left for India 2 years later. They had between 6 and 10 children (still trying to validate all). We visited India earlier this year and are getting closer. We met with Teddy Young (son of Margaret Dominy who married Lt Young an Army doctor. Ted is 89 and a retired tea planter. My grandfather was John Henry who I think was the last to be born in 1889. John Henry managed various tea estates which he took over from Harry.

Hello Pete and Jeff

This is really starting to take off thanks to this site. Your news is most welcome, Jeff, as it seems to provide information I thought  was lost with my father’s death in 1996. My dad Frank, son of Jane Dominy, used to correspond with Jane’s sister and son who lived in the Darjeeling area somewhere. I didn’t pay much attention at the time unfortunately. It sounds as though you may have visited with the son. I thought there was a doctor somehow involved in the family and now I see the link. I would be interested in an address for him. Perhaps we could communicate by a personal response via Roots – though I am not sure how to do that myself yet.
Jeff, you must be quite a close relative to Warwick and I. I would be interested to know what happened to your line of the family and which country you live in now. Thanks to Pete I have got a list of 6 children of Sarah and Harry Dominy and some details about them as well as 6 of Sarah Ann’s siblings with dates.
Thanks, Pete, for that personal response – it filled in some gaps for me and it seems as though we are going to get that Indian information now that Jeff has turned up. I have rummaged through our photo collection and found some photos of relevance – a lovely studio portrait of Harry Dominy with name so it is definitely him plus another excellent quality photo of Samuel and Elizabeth Anstis provided by Hilda to Jane. I also found a small one of nana Jane in 1931 with  I think Samuel Anstis and Elizabeth and another couple who appear to be younger than Jane holding a baby. Samuel Anstis has Jane’s 3 sons beside and on his knees. I also found a good photo of Hilda Gane and my nana Jane standing together as old ladies. Are you interested in photos?

Hello Pete (who are you ?) and Sharyn.

I don't think there are any Domings ! I think it is a mis-spelling of Dominy. I live just West of London England. I was born (*). I am e mailing with Warwick to try and ascertain how many children  Harry and Sarah Anne had between them. They were my great grandparents and their offspring my great aunts/uncles. My father was Wilfrid John and his father John Henry. John Henry lived with his wife Esme and their 5 boys in India. They were all born there. They got out of India to England in 1938 except for one son Hugh who returned to run the tea plantations that Harry and John Henry had managed earlier.  I would love to speak with Sharyn's daughter and compare notes about India. Our trip last March /April was FANTASTIC. We were made VERY welcome by all we met and we met many people. I was joined by my wife (*), one of my sons, (*), while his wife was in early pregnancy, my cousin (*) from the USA (one of two daughters of Denis Dominy, the last to be born to John Henry and Esme) and her friend (*).

Can we exchange e mail addresses ? Mine is: (*)

Hi Pete Sharyn and Brionne

I don't think it is Doming but Dominy. Harry (born Henry but married as Harry I think) Dominy (my great grandfather) married Sarah Anne Anstis in Upottery Devon in 1874 and left for India 2 years later. They had between 6 and 10 offspring (still trying to ascertain the facts). Poor "young" Sarah died at age 46 but Harry continued to reach 85. When we were in Kurseong Cemetery we found the headstones of two children, Sarah Georgina and George Frederick, who died in infancy but their parents, who were also buried there, had no headstones. I believe Harry's father was a Henry born 1813 and he too was married to a Sarah born 1816. A hugh number of Dominys and Anstis' seem to have come from Devon, England. I suspect Harry and Sarah Anne were not the only ones to have emigrated to India.
