Please help decipher
« on: Monday 02 March 09 10:43 GMT (UK) »
Can some kind roots chat person decipher the name on the attached, it appears on my grandmothers brothers baptism certificate from 1875 and lists her mothers maiden name (my great grandmother) which I can't read. To me it could be Dorring/Downing/Dunning all suggestions appreciated.

Thanks,

Hi

Your attachment has gone missing but never mind.

One trick for confirming the lady's maiden name would be to look for the husband's marriage entry in the Freebmd index.  If you can find that click on the view page link and you should see a list of up to eight names one of which ought to be the bride.

Sorry about the missing attachment...tried  a couple of times but got a message "attachment previously sent"? it maybe refering to the fact I attached it to a question I sent on beginners forum (how the hell it can know is mind blowing). Anyway if you can all be patient; I posted said name on beginners forum under Atwell.

Cheers,

If you want to post it again just change the filename.

It looks like Donning to me. (I have copied it from the earlier strand.)

Looking at the way the double 'n's are written in the name 'Kennedy' above, I would also go with 'Donning'.

Hi

I tried to find the marriage on Freebmd and failed - they may be missing from the Freebmd index, they may have been married under different names - my g Grandparents married as Peter and Mary but eventually settled down to be James and Dorothy - or they may have just happily lived together without troubling the marriage registrar.

I can see from your other thread that they had more than the one child so there are other birth certificates that should show the mother's maiden name but it will cost £7 per go to get these.
