Hamilton /McLaughlin : Clonmany
« on: Monday 02 March 09 13:25 GMT (UK) »
My Great Grand parents, William Hamilton & Hannah McLaughlin, came over to Scotland from Ireland around 1874 [married Feb1874 in Glasgow].
However, they went back to Ireland to have their 1st child, Thomas,
[born  Dec 1874].
On Thomas' birth cert their address is given as Clara, Isle of Doagh, Clonmany.
They then returned to Scotland to live shortly after.
Any info on the above family prior to 1874 would be greatly appreciated.
I know that William's Parents wereThomas & Hannah Hamilton [nee McLaughlin ]
and Hannah's parents were : Hugh & Rose McLaughlin [nee Cullion]

Regards
Tam Gallagher.

Hi Tam,

A few more details:

Thomas baptismal cert 8)

Baptised 04/11/1874
Child of William and Hanna Hamilton (nee McLaughlin) - townland of Ligahurry (Isle of Doagh, Clonmany, Co Donegal)
Sponsor - Cath. Hamilton

Nothing for Hamiltons in Clonmany apart from the above, however found the following baptismal record:

Michael McLaughlin

Baptised 25/03/1862
Child of Hugh and Rose McLaughlin (nee Cullen) - townland of Clara (Isle of Doagh, Clonmany, Co Donegal)
Sponsor - Sally McLaughlin

Perhaps a sibling of Thomas' mother, Hannah? It does appear strange though that there are no other baptismal records for this particular family - church records are available from 1852....

Hope this helps,

Clonmany Genealogy

Hello Tam,
I am also descended from William Hamilton and Hannah McLaughlin. Have you found out any information about Eliza Jane Hamilton who was a witness at William and Hannah's wedding?
Regards...

Sorry Leslie James, don't know anything about Eliza Jane Hamilton...was she a sister of William?
If you don't mind me asking...what is your connection with this family?

Hello Tam,
My mum's grandmother, Catherine Hamilton was your grandmother’s younger sister. She married William Campbell from Castlebank Street, Partick, at St Peter’s Church, Partick, in 1905.  They later lived at South Elgin Street. Their only son, also named William married Mary McEwan. Her family were well known around the Bisley area. My mum, Catherine Campbell was born in East Clyde Street. By 1933 she and her family moved to Gordon Street, Clydebank.
Regards
Leslie

Hello Leslie,
Funny you should mention East Clyde St...I was born and brought up there...no 57.
Moved to Faifley in '62, just prior to the street being demolished. Also remember 'The Bisley Bar'
Leslie, you don't happen to know anything about William and Hannah's families prior to them coming to Ireland? I've hit a bit of a brick wall with this.

Tam.
