Glenelg
« on: Wednesday 04 March 09 20:14 GMT (UK) »
Can any one help, I'm afraid my information is a bit sketchy. My G.Grandfather Charles Alfred Jones married a lady called Amy Zillah  ? (she was born in Glenelg in 1889) in 1909 they had a daughter called Mary Pringle in 1911. Can any one give me any help on this.

Hello Alwina,

Welcome to RootsChat!

Can you please give us a little more information?

For instance, do you know when and where Charles was born?

Or where Charles & Amy were married?

Or where Mary Pringle JONES was born?

And what is the source for saying that Amy Zillah was born in 1889 in Glenelg?

Every scrap of information helps.

Best of luck,

JAP
PS: To find Amy Zillah's birth record in Glenelg, you will need to search on the (pay per view) site, ScotlandsPeople at:
http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/
But unfortunately it is not possible to search on given names only.  :'(

Hi Jap
Thanks for your reply, I';ve tried Scotlands people, and can find nothing. The information I have comes from the 1911 census. The family are given as living at 41 Elgin Crescent. London. Amy Zillah Jones is given as being 23 born in Glenelg. Scotland. Mary Pringle Jones was given as 2 months old and also born in Glenelg. Charles Jones is 43 born in Marylebone. London. My G.Grandfather was a bigamist(according to my Grandfather)and was jailed after the war(I can find no record of this). Amy Zillah was supposed to be a Lady of wealth, But until the 1911 census was released we had no idea of a name.
I have also tried looking under Pringle as I did wonder if her daughters second name was infact her  maiden name.
Regards
Val

Been doing a wee bit searching ...

Amy Sylla Fraser (as on Scotlandspeople) was born 1887 in Glenelg. She shows on the 1891 census as:

Millburn House, Inverness
Donald Fraser, head, mar., 59, living on private means, b. Invernesshire
Mary Fraser, wife, mar., 46, living on private means, b. Invernesshire
Don Fraser, son, unm., 25, living on private means, b. Invernesshire
Thomas Fraser, son, unm., 21, living on private means, b. Invernesshire
Robt. J. Fraser, son, unm., 17, scholar, b. Invernesshire
Frederick Fraser, son, unm., 11, scholar, b. Invernesshire
Charles A. Fraser, son, unm., 8, scholar, b. Invernesshire
Alister Fraser, son, unm., 6, scholar, b. Invernesshire
Minnie Fraser, dau., unm., 18, living with family, b. Invernesshire
Johan M. R. Fraser, dau., unm., 15, scholar, b. Invernesshire
Amy Sylla Fraser, dau., unm., 4, -, b. Invernesshire
Betsy Fraser, cook, unm., 17, cook, b. Ross-shire
Kate McKillop, servant, unm., house maid, b. Ross-shire
Alree ?, servant, unm., 27, general servant, b. China, Yang Chow?

Quite a large (and established) family! Looks like the family story may be true. ;)

Congratulations hume!

I'd done some basic (unsuccessful) searches on SP but then thought I'd best wait for Alwina's response.

You've done brilliantly!

See this post on another board ... http://www.rootschat.com/links/05qu/. It mentions a few of the sons moving to London and a Jones granddaughter - same branch?

Hit post when JAP was posting ... Amy is a relatively uncommon name in Scotland (well, I've found that so far) so searching for her wasn't too difficult. Even easier with that uncommon middle name. ;)

And just a tad more ...

Charles married Amy on the 9th August 1910 in Edinburgh. The SP index shows Mary Zillah Fraser, but the image is clearly Amy. Not sure who's mistake that is. :-\ Charles lists himself as aged 42, bachelor, with parents Charles Alfred Jones, produce broker (deceased) and Sophia Jones m.s. [maiden surname] Millar.

Amy is 22 and parents Donald Fraser, school master (deceased) and Mary Fraser m.s. Pringle.

Still can't see anything for Mary's birth.
