Old stones

I saw a stone in graveyard near Chester from 1701. Has anyone found anything older?

yes, i've seen lots of 1600s ones i think 1602  -this is in a graveyard near Rotherham, South Yorkshire  -theres a graveyard in what is now sheffield in which there are some 1500s though

not sure when they were first used but i know of several places in the highlands and islands up here which have stones with no inscription but just carvings (usually of skull and corssbones to keep away evil spirits as the legend goes) so I would guess they are earlier...

Hi,
Not just highlands and islands that use skulls and stuff, I was in Dlaserf cemetry the other day and they had quite a few carvings, mostly wheat bunches (farmers i presume).
Also the graveyard at Stirling castle church has tons of them, think (it was a while ago) i seen a few that appeared to have 15xx on them (they were a tad hard to read)  :-\

Old stones are fascinating, and I too am now wondering when they were first used!! The hunt is on!! ;D

Was in Strathaven cem the other day and they got lots of old ones (including a convenater one from 165?)
Camera was acting up but will have a look and se eif any turned out! if not i'll steal me mums!! (she better photographer then me!! :P)

added:oldest one you can make out (1730 just!! :P)
will send mum link and see what she got!

Those are fantastic. Just spent a good few hours in a church in Cornwall rooting around for my family. Found nearly 200 of them!!!!! Earliest ones I saw were 1780ish tho.
