« on: Monday 09 March 09 03:46 GMT (UK) »
My ancestors migrated from Germany, name of Rath.  At the time of migration which we work out to be between 1890 and 1894, the family consisted of Alfred (father) b.1855app. Emilie (mother)b.1859 app. Emma (dau)b.1888 app. Angelika (dau)b.1890 all born Germany then Blodwen(dau)b.1894app. born Wales, the Charles and Bessie (twins)b.1897app. Chester, Cheshire. Then Kaetchen Olga (dau)b.1899app. Manchester.  This is all I know in the UK is there anybody able to help me search for information in Germany, am banging my head against a brick wall.
Angelika was my g.grandmother any help or information or any Raths related that know anymore, please reply.
Thanks
Denise

Hello johnthepom

Do you know the place in Germany they came from? This is very important as the records here are not centralised.

Have you checked the National Archives for records of Naturalisation?

All the best

Hi Sue
Thanks for your reply.

Unfortunately we are unable to find anything further out as we are in Australia and not able to gain access to Naturalisation Archives and we have no relatives who are able to do so.  We traced the family as far as we could on censuses which only states Germany as birth place.

Hello Denise,

Sue meant have you searched in the online databases of the UK National Archives?

They appear to be living in Chorlton in Lancashire in 1911. Their birthplaces in Germany were probably recorded. Well worth buying the image.

Justin

I think the children born in the UK are (from freebmd):

Blodwen Emily Rath, registered Dec 1893 quarter
Bessie May and William Charles Rath, registered Sep 1895 quarter with the same volume/page numbers (twins)
Kaetchen Olga Rath, registered Jun 1898 quarter.

William Charles possibly married in 1921 as Charles W. Rath to Annie Arnold (in Chorlton)
and there is also an Emily Rath who marries in 1921 to Isaac Bromley (possibly Blodwen Emily?).

The birth certificate of one of the children who was born in England would give their mother's maiden name.

On the London Gazette website I have found dated 21st August 1885 details of
Adolph Isidor Rath living at Residing at 15 Everton Road Chorlton upon medlock with businesses of Manufacture of india Rubber goods in Manchester.

http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/25503/pages/3968

this seems to be a bankruptcy notice.

could your Alfred be an Anglecised version of Adolph?

In the National Archives there are also divorce papers for this Adolph Isidor Rath

On the Uk National Archives website there is a Naturalisation record for an Albert Rath - is your Alfred definately Alfred?

This is the web address for National Archives and explains their services and records

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/about/default.htm?source=about

Reference to Alfred Rath

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/displaycataloguedetails.asp?CATLN=6&CATID=5088349&j=1

These records can be bought online relatively cheaply online. As Adolph is living in the area your ancestors come from - it maybe worthwhile purchasing copies of the documents.

All the best
Sue

Hello, only just come across these posts.

Olga was my grandmother so I might be able to add some information.
