"Four Perthshire Families" by Charles Rogers 1887
« on: Monday 09 March 09 11:38 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone have - or have access to - this book?

I understand it has a chapter relating to the Constable family. I have a distant connection by marriage to the Constable family and there are branches in Fife and Angus. I am trying to find a connection to the Constables in Perthshire and I am hoping the book will help me.

You may have already seen this but just in case, and for those that havn't....

One of the chapters of "Transactions of the Historical Society" vol 1, ed by Rev Charles Rogers 1872 is entitled "Notes on the History of the Scottish Branch of the Norman House of Roger" (beginning pg 357). It's basically one big long family tree, and I found an Isabella Constable, daughter of George Constable of Bendochy in Perthshire, who may be part of my  family tree. You can view it online or download scans of the original book in PDF form here:

http://www.archive.org/details/s1transactions01royauoft

It is very detailed, and I imagine a great source of information if you can link in to the family; some of the surnames it details are Roger, Playfair, Constable, Miller, Davidson.

If you do manage to get ahold of Four Perthshire Families, do let me know - I'm totally stuck on my Constable, not sure if she was a Roger or not  ???

Dear KirstyG,

I thought I would let you know that Stirling Reference Library were willing to photocopy and post to me the chapter on the Constable Family from this book at a very modest cost.

The chapter runs to 23 pages (spread over 12 A4 sheets) and contains a wealth of information.

Dear laurenw,

The chapter does mention Isobel Constable daughter of George Constable of Bendochy. It says she married William Roger, farmer, Cupar Grange and their marriage contract dates from 1758.

If you think this is your Isabella Constable please send me a PM with your email address and I would be happy to pass on further details.

I looked at the the chapter in "Transactions ..." mentioned by you and the most interesting thing to me was a translation of a very old Testament Testamentar. This has in fact helped me in trying to read the old handwriting in Testaments found on scotlandspeople.

If anyone else is looking for this book, this AK Bell Library in Perth have at least 2 copies.

The 4 families are Roger, Haldane, Constable & Playfair, and its a very worthwhile read for anyone with any of those surnames in their family. Many thanks to Ian for passing on information from this book.
