I think that is going to be the gatehouse to hatfield house, which is part of the main estate still.

Hatfield Hyde was part of the old estate, but was more of a hamlet nearby. The place they put the halt (if we're right as to where it was!) was a bit remote.

Steve...had another thought, I can think of a gatehouse nearby, but it might be Cole Green - its on the old A414 opposite the turn off to Letty Green, its set back from the road...it wouldnt be on the GNR line though.

Ash Street.  The Ware Rd runs from the town centre roundabout up to just past the flyover. The houses on the left (heading to Ware) are at least Victorian, so it must have been on the other side. What year are you looking at?

The Police station was built for the New Towns Act, so probably early 50's - originally Harlow was going to be policed by Hertfordshire, with the divisional headquarters at Hertford, hence Harlow nick was actually very small for the size of town (only remedied in the last few years), whereas Herford was a tad large !  Great place to work, quieter than WGC, although Stortford was always a good run on an assistance shout.

Cheers

Pete.

Thanks JJ for taking the time to post a reply, l reckon that one is Hatfield house connected too.

Thanks Pete, l think we already have the right location, its just a case of establishing a bit more about the current buildings history. If my sister speaks to the person she knows we might get some answers.

Ash Street, Ware Road, l was searching the 1911 census for my great grandparents and that came up as their address. 5 Ash Street, Ware Road.

I was familiar with the Ware Road as thats the usual route we take from Welwyn if we go to Harlow or to the Car Boot in the big field at Great Amwell.

Regards....Steve.

Hi Pete, l think l may have cracked it!!

1881 census has the family living at Hatfield Hyde Gatehouse GNR and that of course started the curiosity......

1891 Census has them  living at GN Crossing....entry no. 42

The previous entry no. 41 is called HOLWELL HYDE!!

The entry after...no. 43  is Ludwick Stud Farm

One of the children is down as being born at Welwyn Junction!!

BINGO!!

Only question that remains still is wether the remaining house is the same one or was it adjacent to that and long gone?
Either way l think l have the correct location.  Fascinating.

Thanks JJ, l have seen that, there is also a page for the one l am interested in, Hatfield Hyde Halt, and thats where l got the grid reference from.

I got in touch with Nick Catford on the site and he was very helpful.

That book that is mentioned, Hertfordshires Lost Railways is mostly old photos, and it does include a primitive looking Attimore Halt which would have bewen the next one up the line.
I am just waiting for my Sister to speak to the friend she knows to find out the history of the old building which still remains at what is now called Holwell Hyde.  The grid reference l mentioned puts Hatfield Hyde Halt, plum in the middle of the current Holwell Hyde.

We`ll never be bored will we!!

Thanks for posting........Steve.

Hi folks, just an update, my best pal has worked for the Land Registry for some thirty years and is going to do a bit of digging for me.

More soon (not hit the buffers yet).
