Read with interest all the posts about Gatehouse, and am writing on behalf of a friend who is descended from a family in that area.

Family in question is the Brian's / Bryan's -the surname alters over the various Census. The furthest back relation she can find is one James Brian, born c1800 Ireland who marries Jean Mcmillan, born c1802 in Kirkcudbrightshire.

In the 1841c James Brian, wife and children are living at Birtwhistle Street.
1851c and 1861c they are at 15 Birtwhistle Street.

Majority of their children also lived in later census at Birtwhistle Street. Also in the 1871c his daughter Jane Hewitson nee Brian is living at the Crown and Thistle which was mentioned in the first post.

Does anyone have any more info on this family?

I'm probably a bit off topic here but I thought you may be interested to see how 15 Birtwhistle Street, Gatehouse of Fleet looks now. www.gallowaycottage.co.uk
My partner and I bought it in 2006 and we're planning to retire there asap!
We are told the internal wooden doors, (you can see one in the bedroom shot), are original with hand made nails. There is also an exposed beam at the bottom of the stairs we call Andy's beam after the friend who exposed it during renovations. That's him in the photo.
The second pic is The Ship Inn which I was suprised to read served as a marriage venue back then!

I am involved in searching for descendants of a William Brackenridge, and have ended up with a David Brackenridge who was an innkeeper at Crown & Thistle, Gatehouse of Fleet.

I hope you can share the result of your search please. I know it was more than 5 years ago.

Hi,

Further update on William Brackenridge, found an article in Scotsman 13 Nov 1880, for him receiving 9 month sentence for forging his father's signature and obtaining a sum of money.

"Wm, Breckenridge (sic) pleaded guilty of forging the signature of his father and obtaining thereby sums of money from Mr Cairns, Union Bank, Gatehouse. He was sentenced to 9 months imprisonment"

Therefore he would be in prison at the census in 1881.
