Who knows if the surname Myron would have been changed at Ellis Island, to Myron from another Irish surname that is similar?

Hi

It's a known fact that some immigrants were "renamed" when they were processed at Ellis Island if the immigration officials were unable to interprete their foreign surname and the immigrant was illiterate and unable to write it down.

I'm not entirely sure that applied to Irish surnames - more to German and Italian etc

Hi

Yes - but we all started out the same way so don't worry.  I've made some real bloopers over the years

Myron is not an Irish name ... Griffith's Primary Valuation lists one Myran in Co. Cork and one Myron in Tipperary.

I used the letters Myr, which automatically appear in any position, to see if there might have been anything similar ... the answer is there wasn't.

That is very interesting!
I have wondered, at times, what the history to the name is in relation to being told that they came from Ireland, but not finding any real link.
I certainly need to read up about this.
(Knowledge through conversation is most enjoyable, though)

Thanks

Is this the Myron ancestor you are searching for?:
www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,367049.msg2425483.html#msg24254

The family seem to have left Ireland before 1860 and without an idea of a location in Ireland it will be difficult to find any information.

If they came to U.S through New York they would have gone to Castle Garden not Ellis Island (www.castlegarden.org)

Just to throw a wild guess in here- perhaps Dennis said his name was Ryan and the person in U.S. mis-understood and wrote it was Ryan!
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!
