Here is a link for a local long island newspaper.

This database contains an index of notices of births, marriage, engagements, baptisms, deaths, major anniversaries (birthdays and marriages) and occasional divorces and other events published in the Amityville Record newspaper on Long Island, New York, covering the years 1904-1944.

If anyone is looking in Westchester County, New York (just north of the city), this site might be helpful:  http://www.westchestergov.com/wcarchives/

This site recently added a very helpful search feature for its indexes -
http://archives.westchestergov.com/search-the-archives/search-archives-collections

Also, there are lots of helpful links to historical New York newspapers here -

This blog post gives a good description of how to get 1862-1948  New York City death certificates for free - http://alleghenyancestryandgenealogytrails.blogspot.com/2014/08/accessing-1862-1948-new-york-city-death_1.html

Edited to add:  Unfortunately, the free service through Family Search has come to an end.

The Brooklyn public library has digitized city directories and telephone books from 1856-1967.  Some of them also cover other parts of New York City.  https://archive.org/details/brooklynpubliclibrary?&sort=titleSorter&page=2
