Potts, Nesbit
« on: Wednesday 16 February 05 09:06 GMT (UK) »
I'm looking for Charles Potts, b. circa 1835 in Belfast - father Robert Potts, a mechanic, according to Charles' marriage certificate.  Charles came to Manchester via the army (he supposedly fought at Sebastopol).  Definitely a Protestant, but that's all the info I have.

Also Jane Nesbit, b. circa 1842-5 in Carrickfergus - father Samuel Nesbit.  (Age varies a bit.)  Also a Protestant who came to Manchester before 1868.  She may possibly have a sister Helen.

Any help would be greatly appreciated - I live in France, and don't have easy access to an LDS centre, let alone primary source material!

Thanks Anthony - I've come across the Robert Potts ironmonger elsewhere, and wonder if it's the right one, but an 1843 directory lists him and his brother rather grandly as coal merchants, ship owners, etc, which seems a bit upmarket compared with the mechanic listed on ggrandfather's marriage cert!  I've made a note of the Nesbitts, but at the moment I only have the name Samuel to go on.  Still, you never know when the pieces might fall into place!

Literally all I have to go on is my ggrandparents' marriage certificate, which gives Charles Potts as son of Robert Potts, a mechanic, and Jane Nesbit as daughter of Samuel Nesbit, a seaman.  It's a scan-type certificate, and the handwriting is reasonably good.  Census info gives Charles' place of birth as Belfast, and Jane's as Carrickfergus.  Taking an average on the ages they give at different times, Charles was born 1835/37, and Jane 1842/45.  There don't seem to be that many Potts in Belfast, so with a bit of luck there's a connection somewhere!  Good idea about Robert possibly being a ship's engineer- that could be the link between the families.  Thanks again for your help!
