William and Julia Gavin of Ard Mhuire,Galway
« on: Friday 13 March 09 10:37 GMT (UK) »
Hi Everyone,

I have received some mass cards that were in the possession of a family member that grew up in Durrow, Co. Laois and was a missionary priest in Port Elizabeth, South Africa.

These 2 mass cards are of -

Mr William Gavin of "Ard Muire ", New Line, Galway who died 8 Oct 1934, age 73 yrs.

and-

Mrs. Julia Gavin of Ard Mhuire, St. Mary's Rd, Galway who died 24 Dec 1944 age 75 yrs.

I do not believe they are family members of mine but they could have been a family friend. I am posting them for anyone who is researching the Gavin family as I hope this helps them in their search.

Regard,
Megan

Hi Nipy,

Yes, these cards are wonderful. They have helped me so much with research as some give the birth and death date. Just recently I have collected alot of them and found that the older ones had pictures on them.

It is a shame that the tradition of pics has stopped because it is wonderful to be able to see what some of the family members looked like.

I hope these ones helped someone researching the Gavins, they looked like a lovely couple.

Regards,
Megan

Hi,

I am from Galway and I knew of this family in St Marys Rd Galway. The family had a tradition as solicitors in Galway - I believe William Gavin had a brother who lived nearby in St Mary Rd . The latter had at least 2 sons who I went to school( John & ?) with and 1 daughter Catherine - all still alive - we are all in our mid sixties now. The family legal business is still in operation but subsumed into that of Sandys & Co ( one of W G'S sons is still around ) From the dates quoted these should be his grandsons !.
By the way I recently was given several family keepsakes by my oldest sister c 76yrs- and included is the mass card for Julia Gavin - ahw AS  friend of my Aunt born 1905 c !
Stange coincidence !

Galwayboy,

Thank you for the history on the family. I hope someone researching the Gavins gets to see this thread. It is nice to know that someone in my family and someone in yours held onto these Mass cards.

Megan
