In a word ...No, on his marriage certificate it just says for father    ----- Thorns,   profession -----, not a lot of help. Phone GRO to check if there was anyway of finding his fathers name...answer No, phoned Southwater Parish Church and spoke to the Vicar...he couldn't help, said that his record would be the same as the GRO's...............

BIG BRICK WALL ?

Hi, Jan

Just so you know you are not the only one, I have a relative who is in the 1881 census as a child, then the 1901 census and married, but is completely missing in 1891, cant find him anywhere in the british isles. If I get given any ideas i will let you know so you can try them.

Thank you, you have made me feel much better!.....I think.
If I could find where T C F Thorns was buried I'd dig him up, just to say I'd found him!....frustrating ain't it. Hope you find yours.

Have found a possible ... but would be a mistranscription on the census enumerator's part!

On 1881 there is a Thomas Thomas working as a barman at The Greyhound Inn, Islington, London - he is 22 and born Surrey - just think it's possible because your Thomas is a publican on the 1891 and some parts of what are now South London are in the Surrey/Middlesex registration districts on the censuses.  Only thought of this because I thought Thorns looked more like Thomas on the 1891 - it's v. clearly Thomas on 1881 BUT we can't see what the enumerator copied.
