Hi and welcome
What information do you already know about William?  Have you found him in a census record?

Hi, I am looking for the The Wood Family of Martindale, Westmorland. I am sorry, but I don't have a lot of information to go on yet. Looking for William Wood b.1879. William Wood B.1845 Martindale, Westmorland married Jane Strong 1871. William was a carpenter/Joiner and was lodging away from home.  I am trying to connect this family to the Wood from Haile, Cumberland. Kind Regards Irene Cooper

In 1851 he is with his parents in Martindale
HO107 2440 278 9
Joseph Wood 32 Land Owner b Martindale
Ann 34 b Patterdale
Richard 6
William 5
Mary Ann 4 all b Martindale

There is a possible baptism for Joseph on the IGI in 1819.  Parents Richard and Ruth.  Have you checked that?

I can't see that Sarah is down as male.  Is this on the IGI?   Click on the batch number st the bottom of the rcord and just put in Wood - that brings up a lot of other entries on that film.  If you put parents' names then it cuts it down to Sarah and Joseph but the others may well be extended family.
If Joseph is a land owner he may well have left a will so that would be worth looking for.

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/   wills bit
may have wills for that area but most will be held at Kendal Record Office.  After 1858 they are all held at the Probate Office in London - or you can order copies from the office in York.
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/  general search might be worth a look too.
