ANN DUNN EDINBURGH
« on: Thursday 17 February 05 05:15 GMT (UK) »
I have a real stumbling block.

My gg grandmother Ann/Anne/Annie Dunn believed to have been born in Edinburgh 1826. I know of her marriage in Australia to Charles Hickox/(many variants of spelling on all sorts of certificates) in 1848. No known parents listed on her death certificate.

Who was she? Where did she come from? Who were her parents? How did she come to be in Australia?

Can anyone look up births for that name in Edinburgh please and give me something to go on?

Thanks heaps
Shirley

Hi Shirley

My Dunn line goes back to my 5th GGF, Archibald Dunn of Liberton, Edinburgh - 1743-1792
One of Archibald's sons was called Robert - b1786 - he married Janet Inglis and they had at least 8 children, all born in Liberton between 1807 and 1829

One of those children was Ann Dunn - b 2nd July 1826

I have no information other than births / christenings
It's possible that Robert, wife Janet and all 8 kids went to Australia (or anywhere else) - they seem to disappear from UK records

it seems unlikely that an unmarried Ann would have travelled by herself

Do you have any other clues - Ann's brothers / sisters were
Janet, James, Isabella, Sarah, Jean, Robert, Ann, Margaret

Hi Andrew
I haven't done any further research, however, I believe Ann was a midwife in Australia, so perhaps she may have accompanied another family.

With the names you have provided I might be able to track this lady down and see if we have a common ancestor. Dunn/Dunne is such a common name on shipping lists, but with other names it might make tracking a bit easier.

What date is the last recorded entry in the UK for this family?
It might also help if you could provide birth, marriage, death dates of each member of this family.

I'll certainly let you know if I find anything.
Regards Shirley

I'm afraid I haven't found anything beyond christening records and geographical inference

Liberton in Midlothian is now a suburb in the South of Edinburgh, but back then it was prime farmland
I'm pretty sure of my roots up to Thomas Dunn b1769 but its a bit of an assumption to put him as the son of Archibald Dunn b1743 and Rachel Brown

There is a christening record but those record spell the surname DUN until 1820, after which it becomes DUNN

Ingles connection seems to be relevant.

Don't start me on that Ingles woman!!!

These are previous notes that I have made for myself:

A John Wardie married Janet Inglis in Eddleston on 06/01/1797
A John Wardie married Janet Inglis in Liberton on 26/01/1797
Eddleston is 20km south of Liberton

A Janet Inglis (possibly b1788) married Robert Dunn of Libereton on 05/01/1807

A Rachel Dunn d. of Thomas Dunn b1770 and Janet Blair, was born 22/12/1799 in Newton Village, 4km East of Liberton. Rachel married David Alexander Inglis in Canongate, 01/05/1819

A John Wardie married Euphemia Dunn in Liberton 14/06/1822 (Janet's niece via husband Robert Dunn's brother Thomas)

A John Wardie married Mary Dunn in Liberton 26/11/1847

There's a Hardwell Close in Edinburgh, about 5km North of Liberton ... It's a narrow alley 400m long

In 1891 one side of the alley was the brass foundry

Andrew, the family look to have stayed in Scotland, many of them in the Midlothian area.

Below is a clip from the death cert for daughter Ann. She never married and died in 1908.

If you have a subs to Ancestry, there are a number of family trees for them.

This one is particularly good as it includes numerous original certifcates from www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk www.ancestry.co.uk/family-tree/person/tree/73895719/person/270133945410/facts

There is a burial entry from the Old Parish Registers following the death of Robert Dunn Snr. in 1847.

Janet Inglis, aged 87 and widow of Robert Dunn, died 4 Sept 1862. Her daughter Rachel reported her death. See below a clip with parents' names from this record.

Some family researcher state that mother Sarah's maiden name was recorded as McKean in error and should have read McKenzie.

They also show this birth for Janet on Scotlands People:

Janet Inglis
Birth 25 JAN 1788 Liberton, Midlothian
Parents John Inglis and Sarah McKenzie
