Brazier family - gun and gun lock makers
« on: Saturday 28 March 09 14:54 GMT (UK) »
does anyone know anythign of the Brazier family of gun makers? the majority of them are in Wolverhampton and London, and supplied guns for the american civil war, members also were contractors to the east india company, hudson bay company, the african  and direct to the british gov... they were a huge family but  i cant seem to find any "bases" for them? surely they had to have factories etc? the only two I know of, are the ashes here in wolverhampton, and the current modern day www.josephbrazier.com ones..

But id like to find out more of what they actrually did, who they supplied etc etc...

anyone help?

Have you tried Times online or 19th century British newspapers, for adverts etc.

Just go to Lancashire Libraries and join online:

I have tried the 19th century Newspapers Gales, you cant put the surname in for obvious reasons .Because there would be hundreds of those :) I did find a couple of Brazier builders.I have looked at the website page,It was so famous there has to be company records somewhere in London.I didn't find anything but i need some years.

ooh thank you for the replies! i'll start looking in the addys you both gave and yes thats my thinking, the family is/ was huge and is still a big deal today (but now with just one company who carry the Brazier brand in name only)

As to dates, well... i come from the wolverhampton arm of the family.. which still, is HUGE lol

My great great great gran was kate brazier, her brother was a gun lock maker too and there father was Frederick Brazier, theres a list of the fam here...

http://www.wolverhampton-gunlocks.fslife.co.uk/

in 1851, kate and her brothers n  sisters are all living down in london but the father isnt, the reason, i believe is he was taking gun locks down to the "main" brazier family and then onwards to.... wherever

but they were there, for a few years, as two of kates sisters are also born down in london

In london they are a4 14 black horse yard middlesex (near oxford street) whereas other braziers are listed as being in marylebone road, which is only a handfull of streets away...

and on the www.josephbrazier.com website on its history page, it mentions a john and frances brazier, and a john brazier who became a knight, I believe these are still the same "brazier" family, but I havent found any actual link between the branches of the fam "yet"

Hi -
James Brazier, gunlock manufacturer, of Bond Street, Wolverhampton, successfully petitioned for discharge from bankruptcy in  Feb 1863, as recorded here in the London Gazette: http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/issues/22736/pages/2623
(third item, column one).
