COSWAY Family - Richard COSWAY 1742 - 1821
« on: Saturday 28 March 09 16:39 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to trace the Cosway family back in time and there is a "story" that we are related to the famous miniture painter Richard Cosway b 1742 - d 1821.

Richard was born in Tiverton, Devon and his father was a master @ Blundells  School. His uncle was mayor of Tiverton at the time.

My research has taken me back through my family history to a William Cosway b 1798 - d 1884 in Tiverton, but no further.

If you have any details of the Cosway family that connect with the painter, please let me know. I attach a self portrait for interest..

Hello

I believe we are related to this artist too. My mum's maiden name was Nutt and I believe it is this side of our family... I can ask my uncle for more info.

Kind Regards

Richard COSWAY was bapt 5 Nov 1742 at Oakford, son of Richard & Mary. They do not appear to have had any other children.
There were two William COSWAYs baptised at Tiverton in 1797 - one was the son of George & Mary and the other the son of Thomas & Sarah.

Hi Jenny,

I cant find a Edward Nutt/Caroline Cosway marriage or a Edward Henry Nutt on any English Census born c 1852.

There is a Caroline Cosway who married James Nutt and emigrated to Australia in 1848 on "The Agincourt" which left from Calais
Image of record has her parents as SAMUEL/CAROLINE, Father living in Tiverton
James Nutts  parents John/Mary, both dead
James was a Smith (Blacksmith) from Somerset

1822 Pigotts Directory has these Nutts listed Tiverton;
COSWAY   Samuel   Grocer   Fore St.
COSWAY   Richard   Artist
COSWAY   Thomas   Currier   Bampton St.
COSWAY   Thomas   Perfumer   Gold St.

There is a Caroline Nutt Death Reg NSW 1900 and it has her Parents as;
Father's Name   Thomas
Mother's Name   Caroline

So informant didnt know her Fathers name if it is her?
Or wrong name on Ship record for her father?

(Also a Death Reg 1879 for a Caroline Matilda Nutt, Parents George/Sarah from memory)

So informant didnt know her Fathers name if it is her 1900?
If the one on Shipping List she would be in her 90's.

1841 Census
Barnstaple, Devon
James NUTT, 35, Smith, not born in County
Caroline, 40, not born in County
George, 15
Sarah, 13
Mary, 10
Edward, 6***
John, 9mths
All children are born in Devon.

Birth Reg GRO Index;
NUTT, JOHN  SAMUEL, Mothers mn COSWAY****
GRO Reference: 1840  D Quarter in THE BARNSTAPLE UNION  Volume 10  Page 15

Then this Daug;
NUTT, CAROLINE  MATILDA, Mothers mn COOWAY**
GRO Reference: 1843  J Quarter in OF THE BARNSTAPLE UNION  Volume 10  Page 21

Trish :)

Hello

I am in Australia and they might have been married in Australia... Caroline's maiden name was Cosway...and sorry she was Edward's mother and Caroline's husband was James Nutt - sorry about that - not sure where they lived, but guessing Australia.

 Best

Jenny
