RICE & McMICHAEL Ontario censuses
« on: Tuesday 31 March 09 00:15 BST (UK) »
We are helping a friend chase her husbands ancestors and have a family in
Ontario and wondered if anyone can help us ?

We have found this, but are having hassles getting the census details ?

Robert William RICE, 32, Farmer, Chingaucousy, Stephenson, s/o Hugh &
Hannah,
Married Agnes Jane McMICHAEL, 20, McKillop, Stistead, d/o Alexander and
Isabella
Witnesses Robert and Grace McMICHAEL of Stisted, 10 Apr 1889 at Stistead

We have found the RICE's and McMICHAEL's in the 1881 Canadian Census
possibly the RICE"S in 1901 and 1911 but don't have access to the census.
Also possibly the McMICHAELS in 1901 father deceased.

Can anyone help,
Alex and Jan

Thanks so much for giving us those web pages, is there anywhere to search for them before 1881 ?

Yes, if you go the Libarary and Archives Canada site where the 1891 census is, you will find the 1871 Ontario Census, it is only head of household in the index, you have to obtain the microfilm to see who else is living in the house.

The 1851 census is at the same site as the 1901 and 1911.

http://ontariocensus.rootsweb.ancestry.com/  You will find parts of the 1861 census here, not sure if it 100% transcribed but they are working on it  :)

The last time I was at the free site they didn't have the transcription for the 1851 census linked to images at Library and Archives Canada. LAC does have a database for that census but it is searchable by place, not name. Once you find your people at the free site, you can use the location information to find the corresponding images at LAC.

There are a few more children to Alexander McMichael & Isabelle darling, a Walter Abraham ,an Adam, and a Margaret Isabella...
several marriages can also be looked up for you for her siblings once you get your bearings...
