22 Cornhill Lincoln, 1901

Afternoon all
The above address is given in the 1901 census, head of the house is Page Richard Goulson, hotel keeper. There is a visitor and two servants listed in the household.

In September 1901 the London Gazette has an announcement re a will for PRG, no specific address is given and the death cert just mentions residence as Cornhill.

I know from the 1930's Kelly's that there were by that time two hotels on Cornhill, "City Hotel" and "Cornhill Hotel", but neither are numbered.

Would either of these been at #22 and does either of them (or the  building known as #22 in 1901) still stand today?

I remember the City and Cornhill but can't remember which was which

Numbering seems to be a remnant of earlier days, as it's difficult to find numbers on the south side of Cornhill.

so I should think 22 was the Cornhill.

The large building above 17 is Barclays Bank - immediately to the left would have been (I think) one of the hotels ... I'm not sure if the next one is old or new (probably new), then the big square one is obviously new.

PRG was a groom and his wife to be a barmaid in 1871, i'm sure that was at one of the hotels on Cornhill at the time (the image vanished when the old pooter went pop  ) and the '91 sees them on Silver St (Bulls Head).

I have a couple of stoneware bottles with his name on them (PRG also had a mineral water business), assorted certs etc.

When i next get to Lincoln it looks like a trip to see what the old Cornhill images might reveal, it would just be nice to have a copy of an image that shows the building even if it is a bit later than 1901, at least i have an idea of which part of Cornhill is most likely now

Hello," The City Hotel, "stood till 1973,
when the whole of that block was demolised,
it was converted into an Hotel in about 1920, from being a Wine and Spirits store,

but to the right of it stood the " Cornhill Hotel " which was established in about 1867.

so your lot belonged to " Cornhill Hotel "

Certainly the City and the Cornhill were in that trio of buildings between Barclays and the WHS/Mothercare complex.

Bulls Head was demolished in 1957/8 (Lincoln as it Was Vol.IV)

I'm just about at the point of applying for lottery funding to try and buy a copy of every old image held by the archives, my lot seem to be in just about every part of Lincoln from the 1820's to the present day so something would fit every picture available  

Why oh why did i move to Scotland and THEN start researching.
