John KILFEDER married Anne KNOX in 1834
« on: Friday 03 April 09 14:17 BST (UK) »
John KILFEDER  b. abt 1806  d. 1884  Ballyshannon, Donegal

married 1834  Cloonclare, Leitrim

Anne KNOX  b. abt 1817  d. 8 Jul 1869  Ballyshannon, Donegal

I'm aware of the huge number of variations of the family name.

Leitrim - Moneen  John & Michael Kilfeder - "John Kilfeder taught a Hedge School here in the 1820s."

8 known children:

1. Robert  b. 4 Feb 1835 ? Kinlough, Leitrim ?  or  Bundoran, Donegal ?

I'd appreciate some help with this.

Thanks.

Fred

Hi
Suggest you try:
www.ifhf.brsgenealogy.com      (Irish Family History Foundation).

There is a match for Kilfedder/Knox marriage in Co. Leitrim for 1834?  The charge is €5 a search.

Good hunting

Hi Fred
I am a descendant of John Kilfedder and Anne Knox.  Two of their daughters, Rebecca and Alice, migrated to Australia in 1870.  Rebecca is my great grandmother.  I have limited info on the ancestors so wondering how your research was going?
Regards
Steve

Hello Steve,

Thanks for your reply.

I have made some progress. As well as Alice and Rebecca, Mary Ann, James Michael, John and Robert also arrived. My connection is via Robert's marriage to Sarah Jane Mellefont in Cork 6 Aug 1865. They arrived on 'Queen of the South' later that year.

I have the following dates of birth but have not been able to verify them. All said to be Kinlough, Co Leitrim. Perhaps the details came from a Family Bible.

Robert 4 Feb 1835
William 21 Feb 1837
John 14 May 1839
James Michael 18 Nov 1841
Alexander 16 Apr 1844
Alice 9 Dec 1846
Rebecca 4 Feb 1850
Mary Ann 18 Jan 1853

Regards,

Fred

Thanks Fred, much appreciated

Interesting that a large % of the children migrated.  I can't find the "Queen of the South" records ... did they arrive in Melbourne?  Was that in 1865?

I have from From Roots Ireland
Anne Kilfedder, Died 7 July 1869  Age 52, Address:  Moneen, Married, Farmers wife, Kinlough Civil Registration District, Informant John Kilfeder “present at death”  Address:  Moneen
AND
Church Burial Record
Name: John Kilfeder Date of Death: 25/08/1884
Age: 78 Parish / District: ROSSINVER CHURCH OF IRELAND
Address: Moneen County: Co. Leitrim
Status: Denomination: Church of Ireland

FYI
Rebecca Kilfeder  Died: 24 Dec 1919 - Coburg, Vic   Buried: 26 Dec 1919
Married 15 Nov 1876 spinster, no occupation of Fitzroy.
Can provide more detail on this branch if of interest.

I have a photocopy of a page of a publication (I believe in the Melbourne Library) which is a summarises content from a Kilfeder family bible.  My father obtained the page many years ago and I haven't traced it.  Copy attached.

Regards
Steve

Hello Steve,

Thanks for the details on Anne and the page from the Bible.

Robert was the odd one out in that he ended up in Queensland. He is my connection via his marriage to Sarah Jane MELLEFONT. Sarah's sister Anne married my gg grandfather, William HAMILTON who was in R.I.C. as was Robert.  Interesting how so many closely connected ended up in Police service. William's brother John served in Mounted Police in Victoria.

"He migrated on the vessel 'Queen of the South' which left London 31 Aug and arrived Brisbane 8/9 Dec 1865."

Robert Kelfedder  Age 29  'Queen of the South'   IMM/112 p.238  Reel M1696

"He described himself as a farm labourer in order to obtain free passage. On arrival in Brisbane Robert joined the police force and was appointed to the dectective branch. He served in Brisbane, Rockhampton, Maryborough, Toowoomba and Ipswich. He met with a serious accident on duty and retired in 1880 on a pension with a rank of Sub-Inspector. In 1886 his address was Martin St Valley but on his death it had been for some time 'Miora' Lower Bowen Terrace, Brisbane."

James Michael, John and Mary Ann have not yet been found in shipping records.  I have more details after their arrival in Australia.

Unassisted Inward passengers to Victoria
KILFEDER Alice     age 23
KILFEDER Rebecca    age 20

The 'Essex' sailed from Plymouth on 10 November 1870 arriving at Melbourne on 25 January 1871.The Captain was Charles Hodder.

I have details of Frederick Edwin TURNER thanks.  Another one who was in the Police force.

Regards,

Fred
