Pack Horse Inn Bridport
« on: Friday 18 February 05 16:37 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
Anyone out there with any knowledge of the Pack Horse Inn, Bridport? It was in East St but I have been unable to find out anything else other than it is no more. My gggrandfather William Rendall was innkeeper there in 1861, so it would be good to know it's exact location, whether building still exists etc. Regards  Jan

Thanks Janet. The "used to be a Packhorse Inn" ads to my belief that it no longer exists as a pub or has been renamed. Very interesting history of Powerstock. Shame my Gales come from Shipton Gorge rather than there. Regards Jan ;)

I know you wrote this a long time ago.
Today I have just been looking through my late parents photo album and saw they honeymooned at the Packhorse hotel in Bridport in Sept 1955 and also wondered where it was, so stumbling across this thread.

You probably have photos of it, but if not let me know and I can email ones from my parents album.

Hi Roger
Welcome to Rootschat :D

I'd forgotten about this thread! I have now got a photo thanks, sent to me by Bridport museum. The pub was at 35 East St, it closed in 1969 and was knocked down, it is now Blockbuster video shop.

Jan ;)

Hi Jan,

Thank you for the information - I was curious if it was still standing and what stands in its place there.
For your interest I have scanned in two of the 3 photos which show you the front of the Packhorse and then the actual bar sign showing.

These photos were taken in September 1955 on my parent's honeymoon there - hope they are of interest to you. There is another one from the back-yard if it's on interest that I can post.

Thanks for posting the lovely pictures. I would love to see the one from the backyard if you don't mind posting it.

Kind regards
Jan ;)

Hi Jan,

Really glad you liked the pictures (the lady looking out the windows is my late mother on their honeymoon).
I have scanned the one my parents took at the rear of the Packhorse hotel (I'm guessing it's probably never been photographed before).  Hope you enjoy it - I think it's full of charachter.

kind regards,

Roger

Ooh that's lovely, clearly a very old building in disguise looking at that jetty. I imagine the yard hadn't changed much since my gg grandfather's day.

Thank you so much for sharing the photos

Jan ;)
