John,  if I may, one more question :)

Is it common on your area to note in the PRs if the burial is for a child of say 10 years?

The reason I ask is that John & Margaret Swinerton Thatcher also baptized a son John Feb 4, 1737/8.   They also baptized twins Joseph & Benjamin Nov 26, 1749,  which fits in for a death for the mother Margaret in Feb 1749/50.

But if the burial Jun 11, 1748 was for John Thatcher Senior ??  :o :o  What do you think :-\

Hi Heather

So far, I have only seen the PR's saying "infant" or "s/o" (what the age cut off between infant and son I do not know - but would like to know ?)

Looking at Bishopstone PR's ...

Bap's

John s/o Edward 9 Feb 1644/5
John s/o Edward 8 Jul 1663
Jonathan s/o John 24 Dec 1682
John s/o Edward 20 Feb 1697/8
John s/o John & Margaret 5 Feb 1737/8, b 4 Jan ;)
John s/o James & Martha 3 Dec 1738, b 28 Nov
John s/o Edward & Eliz 24 Sep 1744
Sarah s/o John & Margaret 15 Jul 1744, b 12 Jul ;)
John s/o Edward & Eliz 23 Jan  1747/8
John s/o Edward & Eliz 6 May 1761 (twin)
Susannah d/o Edward & Eliz 6 May 1761 (twin)
Thomas s/o John & Margaret Nov 1746 ;)
Joseph s/o John & Margaret 26 Nov 1749 ;)
Benjamin s/o John & Margaret 26 Nov 1749 ;)

Bur's

John s/o Edward 7 Oct 1744
John 11 Jun 1748
Margaret w/o John1 Feb 1749/50
Benjamin 30 Dec 1750
Joseph 4 Apr 1751
John s/o Edward & Eliz 5 Jan 1752, Inf
John 12 Jun 1761, inf twin
Susannah 12 Jun 1761, inf twin
Sarah 7 Jan 1770
Thomas 20 Feb 1770
John 19 Feb 1771

It is quite possible that John Snr (h/o Margaret) was buried 11 Jun 1748, because the Margaret entry shows she was the "wife of" and not a "widow"

It was also quite possible that John's father was Edward, therefore he was possibly bap 1697/8

I hope this helps you in your research

Hi John

Thenk you VERY much for taking the time to type all those B/Bs out for me.    It sounds like the same system of recording was consistent with those I'm familiar with in researching PRs in North Wales.

I can't recall where I read it, but my understanding is that an "infant" was a small child.  Possibly one that could be carried up to the age of 2 or 3.  Then "child" referred to one dependant on parents, probably to early teens.  The entries would also reflect the diligence applied by the individual church official ;)   Others here on RC may have more knowledge or a specific reference to a church policy?

Many thanks again.
Heather
