Passenger lookup please
« on: Thursday 09 April 09 14:32 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I don't know how far back records are available but I am interested in the following couple:

George Stubbs b 1783 and his wife Mary nee Darker, dob not known. They emigrated to Wisconsin. I don't know the date but I think it was after their fourth child was born which was in 1813. The children were William, Mary, George and Elizabeth. I would be interested in any further information about their passage and what happened to them when they got there.

Thankyou
Brie

Thank-you Woody.

I am a bit suspicious about the date of birth being 2 years out. George was definitely born in 1783 but of course the informant of his death may have made the error.

The trouble is George and Mary are such common names and Stubbs isn't exactly unusual.

So I'd say the jury's still out.  :)

That would be Waukesha County.

It is in southeastern Wisconsin so it would have been one of the first parts of the state to be settled - perhaps in the early 1840s.  They may have first settled somewhere farther east and then moved on to Wisconsin when the government started opening up land for settlement.  So might want to look for them in other states to the east - perhaps New York or Ohio.

A lot of settlers [including some of my ancestors] were drawn to Wisconsin starting in 1848-49 when the so-called 'Indian Lands' were opened to settlement.

There is a passenger list entry that has a Geo and Mary Stubbs, both age 60, arriving in New York onboard the Constitution on 9 Sep 1847. Their destination is only listed as the US.

On the 1850 census for Genesee, Waukesha County, Wisconsin there is the following entry:

Geo Stubbs, 65, farmer, born England
Mary Stubbs, 62, born England
Mr. Morris, 23, labourer, born Ireland
Thomas Stubbs, 32, born England, farmer

On the 1860 census for Genesee, Waukesha County, Wisconsin there is this entry:

George Stubbs, 77, farmer, born England
Mary Stubbs, 74, born England
John Stubbs, 44, born England, farm labourer

These are the only George and Mary Stubbs born in England in the 1780s that I could find in Wisconsin.

Thank-you Jacquie and Erato,

I'm not sure. I have the details of George and Mary and their first 4 children from contemporaneous family records. The last of these 4 children was born in 1813. One of the 4 (George) also went to the USA but I don't know whether it was at the same time as his parents. What puzzles me is that if they did have further children born in England, viz John and Thomas, they are not mentioned in the record. I am going to have to check this as I may have overlooked them.

The age of George in the 1850 record would be 2 years out although the 1860 one would be correct. Query: Are they the same George? The occupation however, is spot on; my George came from a long line of farmers.

So I think I have a little more digging to do at this end.

Thanks again
Brie

Good morning Woody, Jacqui & Erato,

This is an update nearly 8 years on! This is the correct family and I am now in touch with a descendant from that line in the US.

Thanks again for your help
