Rowntree / Rountree - Armagh
« on: Thursday 09 April 09 22:20 BST (UK) »
If there is anyone out there connected to the Rowntree / Rountree family, who were in Co Armagh in the 19th C onwards please reply. My grandfather was born Loughall in 1890 and know his parents and grandparents were from that area.

Hi.
I am not connected to your family but I have access to some Rowntree and a lot of Rountree information. If you can supply names and rough dates we may be able to help.

Thanks for getting back I will list what I know.

My grandfather was Robert Henry Rowntree bn 3rd May1890/91. He was illegitimate. His mother was Annie Rountree bn 1/9/1867 in Loughall. My mum was told his fathers name was Browne, but cannot be sure. Robert served with the Royal Irish Fusilliers in WW1 at The Somme then later in the 8th Tank Battalion. He married Isabella Florence Douglas at Annaghmore Church on 7th May 1918.

Isabella's parents were John Douglas and Mary Calvert.

Annie Rountree was the eldest of a number of children by James Rountree and Mary Ann Orr. They were married 4th Oct 1866 in Loughall.

Children known at present although some doubts over Thomas / Samuel.

Annie
James bn 10 Nov 1870, Loughall. Either he or one of his daughter married a Hannigan?
William Henry, bn 8 Jan 1878
Elizabeth, Bn Abt 1880, married a King and had Mary, Dorrie and Alfie?
George, Bn Abt 1882
Mary (Minnie) bn Abt 1885
Samuel? bn abt 1888
Thomas? U/K

I know that Annie, William, George and Minnie came to England but otherwise have no knowledge what happened to the rest of the family.

Finally I know that James Rountree's father was William, bn Abt 1820, Whilst Mary Ann Orr's father was Robert his occupation was listed as soldier. Mary Ann was the Midwife for Loughall and also cleaned in the school.

Any help no matter how small would be appreciated.

Thank you

Hi,
I can find very little which you do not already have but one marriage which I found was for
John Douglas and MINNIE Calvert on 7 Feb 1894 in Loughgall Presbyterian Church.

Another which may be of interest was the marriage of an Anna Rebecca Rountree to Robert Brown on 13 Jun 1911 in Armagh 1st Presbyterian Church.

Thanks for your help, I suppose the only way forward is to check the actual remaining parish records, if they exist. I also await the 1911 census being placed on-line.

Best wishes

Yes, all my side of the family come from Richhill, just south of Loughall.   This is the area where the family was established in the 17th. century.
