Locating a cottage purchased in 1868
« on: Monday 13 April 09 09:54 BST (UK) »
Solomon and Mary Blay (Bleay) returned to London from Tasmania sometime in 1868 and "purchased a cottage and piece of ground outside London" . They sold it after a very short period and returned to Tasmania. How can I find out just when in 1868 and precisely where outside of London they purchased the cottage?

Welcome Solomon41

You will find lots of people here who will offer you some good suggestions.  May I ask where you found info about purchasing that cottage and piece of ground please?  Also, any dates for birth, marriage etc for the couple.

Many Cheers, from me, - I'm in NSW Australia !!!

Hi

Welcome to Roots Chat.

If they returned to Tasmania after 1871 then we should be able to locate the place of the cottage if they were actually living in it, but as Mary Ann says dates etc would be good to track them down in 1871.

As for the date of the actual purchase I can offer no suggestions for that. Sorry.

I have all the information regarding Solomon and Mary from here in Tasmania. They left here to return to England to get out of the spotlight as he was the Tasmanian public executioner. Back in London he was recognized and hounded so they decided to flee back to Tasmania. I would really like to find the cottage he purchased if it still exists or at least its location.

Hi Solomon41,

I will try to help you, but may I please ask what type of document, or at least the date of the document, even if a private letter, that indicates they bought a cottage and a piece of land somewhere in England in 1868, and then sold it and came back to Australia.

Cheers,  Mary Ann

Some info here

and links to http://www.landreg.gov.uk/

If they were still in England on 2 April 1871 then perhaps they and house can be found in census. But I cannot see a Solomon BLAY or BLEAY

I do see him in mentions of his hangman career. Could be have changed name in UK?

Solomon wrote a letter to the Tasmanian Governor in early 1871 telling him of going to England two years before. Solomon was still in Tasmania in March 1868 and had returned by November 1869

It might be worth looking for the passenger list for their return to Tasmania.  These lists often give the address where they were living in the UK.
