34 Hospital Street, Gorbals
« on: Monday 13 April 09 18:38 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Can anyone help please?

My ggg gfather Charles Moore, his wife Mary (both born in Ireland) and three children were living in 34 Hospital Street, Gorbals, Lanarkshire  on the 1851 census, along with other people - surnames Brannan, Fletcher, Tarone, Carlin and MacKie, possibly others!

Does anyone know what this place was and does anyone know of any photographs?

Charles and his son Richard, my gg gfather, were  Cotton Spinners, where would they have worked?

many thanks,

Pip :)

Hi Pip,

If you go to the Mitchell Library site at:

http://www.mitchelllibrary.org/virtualmitchell/index.php?a=street&i=H

You'll be able to see what Hospital Street looked like.

Best wishes

Hi Rockford,

It seems to be rather a long Street,  I hope the Moores were in a slightly better part than is shown on some of those photos!  But I suppose coming from Ireland they didn't have a choice, though they were supposidly in Scotland 16 years (the age of Richard their eldest son born Renfrewshire?) before this!

I wonder if the Street is still there today?

Many thanks for passing that link on, it was very interesting, giving me a flavour of the conditions they probably lived in

Hospital Street was one of the many streets in the Gorbals which disappeared during the last phase of redevelopment in the area.

The image is from the 1857 map of the area and shows several places near number 34 where your ancestor may have worked

Hi Pip
Were these other families actually all part of his household? I think you will probably find that there are several households at the address. The traditional tenement buildings such as you see in the images in the Mitchell Collection had a number of individual appartments in each close. (If you're not familiar with the term that is the communal entrance/stairway to the flats) All of the properties in a close would have the same address. If you assume there are at least two appartments to each floor and three or four floors then you have quite a few families living at each address but in their own flat. I would guess that your family, like most working class folk in Glasgow at the time lived in one of these tenement flats near to their place of work. I think your family would have been lucky not to be living in the type of accommodation you see in those images in 1851. Even in the 1960s a lot of folk, several members of my family among them were still living in homes just like those in The Gorbals and other parts of Glasgow.

Thank you Falkyrn,

maps are most informative and always post a history of their own.  When was the last phase of redevelopment in the area?  If I was to go there today where would I head for? Sorry, I'm from Wales and wouldn't know where to start!

thank you for posting the map, something more to put into my family history collection,

many thanks,

Pip :)

Hi Sheena,

the families listed were all at the same address but now you have made this point and seeing the housing, I would say you were right in that they were Tenement blocks and lived in this sort of housing close to their place of work.  I would imagine there were worse places to live at this time!

Thank you for the information - everything always falls into place in the end,

many thanks,

Pip :)
