Redevelopment in the Gorbals area has been ongoing for some time and the latest phase was just a few years ago when some of the high rise blocks erected in the 60's/70's were demolished.

This modern map shows the area today - Although Hospital Street ran parallel to Crown Street in the original map the modern day Crown Street has been completely re aligned and probably incorporates parts of Hospital Street and Thistle Street.

Hi Falkyrn,

It gives me a good idea where I am looking at, it's hard to put things into perspective if you don't know the area, so thanks very much this was a great help,

Hi Falkyrn,

It gives me a good idea where I am looking at.  It's not easy if you are not familiar with the area but this is great, sort of puts it all into perspective,  I shall google earth it myself and check out the surrounding area

many thanks,

Pip :)

Hi,
some Gorbals pictures before redevelopment here.
http://urbanglasgow.co.uk/Glasgow_in_the_1970s_Last_days_of_the_Old_Gorbals_about1236.html

Hi,

thank you for the link - it's wonderfully  interesting to see all these photographs.  What kind of place was The Gorbals?  After talking to friends they said it was a very rough (can I say that without offending anyone?) area.  I would imagine the people who lived there worked hard and long hours - a very industrious area in it's time!

I know I have a little reading to do but can you shed a little light please?

many thanks,

Pip :)
